Did you check for debris that might have wrapped around the steer knuckles? There's gotta be somethin' there preventing the steer assembly from re-centering.

You need to bend one of the leads slightly away from the center pin. Not enough that you lose contact with the pin, just relieve some of the tension....

Do you need to put the stabilizer bar back on after you have done the spring mod? I would think that it would defeat the purpose of the springs by limiting the upward travel of the stear knuckle pin?
