soldering questions

Hey all I'm getting ready to do a dual cell mod
on one of my zaps, and was worried about
soldering directly to the battery.

I've got a couple of 1.3 150mah batterys
coming in the mail and didn't want to wreck them.

Any tips or insight would be mosthelpful

i don't see why soldering to the bat would be bad... but im tring the same.i would also want to learn.

Heat kills batteries. If you hold the gun on the battery too long, she's toast. Problem is, you need heat to make the solder stick. Oh the quandry! And cooking one is easy to do as it's pretty hard to get solder to stick to the bare battery. Hopefully the batts you're getting have tabs already soldered on, if not, God help ya. Only advice I have is flux. If that battery ain't clean, nothin's gonna stick.

I heard somewhere that you could scrape up the battery
ends w/ sandpaper to make the solder stick better?

Queso, do this.

1) Sand/file the battery end/s so they look fresh and "shiny".

2) Using the soldering iron, quickly melt some solder onto the battery contact where you scraped it. This will put a little blob of solder on the contact.

3) Do this for both sides and then let it cool down.

4) Tin the end of the wire by putting some solder on it, do this for both wires.

5) RE-melt the solder on the end of the battery whilst holding the tinned wire to it. You should be able to get a rock solid connection in seconds...

This is a sure fire way of doing it right. It keeps the temp of the batteries low and ensures a solid join.
