Exclamation slot car mod!

ok. ive decided to tear apart an old slot car. (couple years old) and use it for the basis of this mod. i am going to try to put the steering on the front of the slot car, i have tested with 4 alkalines and it seems to have tons of juice. however im not sure how long they will last. the other thing i will have to overcome are the magnets. they may affect my steering so i might have to lengthen the car a bit.

its lexan. it took some time to make.. but i didnt measure correctly, so the body was too long to fit a bit. so i just extended the tabs on front and rear. i tried to shorten my mold but ended up pretty much destroying it.. it just lost its looks and proportions when shortened.. so i havent molded any since the first ones...

back to the slot car mod.. i have been testing with several battery setups to see how many i will need to get some good speed out of these things... 2 bats, is simply not enough 3 bats would probably be equal to a 2.0 motor. 4 bats and this thing is hitting its power band or someting because it starts to scream. so it looks like im gonna have to do a laymans 4 cell mod with this thing. although im not sure that the bats will last very long. i have a feeling that this motor will drain the batteries a lot faster than the bit motors..

the other option is the mosfet mod. someone correct me if im wrong. but shouldnt this allow more voltage to go directly to the motor? if so then this 4 cell would be even faster, or i could auctually go with 3 cells.. i would love to be able to hook up a 9v battery to it, but i know that would fry the pcb... are there any pcb's that can handle more voltage than others? does anyone know?

I like the idea I have old slot cars too post pic as you do it so I can as well
I also think that full size bit or bigger batteries would be better the laymans ones wouldent have enough juice

yea, they would probably only have enough juice for a 10 foot run... im thinking possibly li-poly for a battery, with a mosfet mod, so that i can get max power to the wheels...

this mod is gonig to take me a while as i dont have a lot of time to fool with the cars. but i will keep posting my progress...

I was thinking more along the lines of AAA nicads they dump as much apmage as you need and run thier fullest till thier done
Where can you get li poly batteries how much are they and what else do you need to use them
If you sont use the lipoly I will problably build one as well

li-polys i think can be bought at radio shack, but i think you need a special charger for them... i auctually thought of using the extra battery from my cell phone.. its a 3.6v lithiom ion and i could just charge it with my cell phone charger.. its a pretty small battery.. otherwise i think im gonna use these 1/2AAA batteries.. they are 300mah bats.. and i could put 4 of them in the place of 2 AAA batteries getting twice the power.. the batteries would of course be side by side running lengthwise the center of the chassis..

I tried running my slot car first with a 9V battery whick was kind of dead and it didnt spin then with 2AA nothing again so I hooked it ip to my 7.2V race pack from a larger rc car at it finally went
my transformer says it puts out 220V at 7VA form the standard 120V at 7A
what is a V amp
wierd eh

i noticed the same thing with the AA batteries.. they didnt work.. so i tried wiring directly to the motor contats instad of the metal runners on the bottom of the car... bingo. it worked. i guess those things dont make the best contact....

well im starting to make a lot of progress with my slot car engine bit... i decided to use the bit chassis, this way i wont have to fiddle with the steering... the only issue is the motor.. it will not quite fit inside the chassis, so i will be mounting it in the body at an angle.. my only worry is that the magnets from the engine will throw off my steering.. so far i have mounted the rear axle from the slot car in my bit...i basically cut out the middle of the rear of the chassis to allow for the big gear to pass through.. (i will post pics later.. i slightly drilled out the area where the old axle was mounted to account for the larger size axle (diamater of the metal axle is slightly larger than the bit axle)it now spins freely... i had though about extending the chassis to sink it all inside.. and i still might do it...this engine would work great inside a zip zap.. now the only question is where im gonna put the batterys.. well heres the battery i plan on using..

its a radioshack cordless phone battery, if this dosent fit right i might have to split up the cells, to place them better inside the bit...i might get 2 of them so i can use 4 cells.. the more voltage this motor gets the better.. i also will be stopping at the hobby store to get some new silicone tires for the rear. the ones on it now are all cracked up and shinny (no grip at all) i will try to get some pics up in the next day or two.. i have been taking tons of them.. its just a matter how they turn out.
