Exclamation Prolix!

I was rummaging around in the old workshop (read: basement) and found some old gun cleaning products I had. I found some old Prolix. For those who don't know, Prolix is a gun cleaner/solvent that does not contain grease, oils, silicones, or graphite.

Well, they also make a lubricant called Xtra-T. It too has no "normal" lube ingredients. I happened to have some. Of course, I had to try it on my Bit gears. Man oh MAN! This stuff works great on Bits. It's not overly greasy, and it's almost dry to the touch.

I used the tiniest drop on the pinion gear and idler gear. Not only did it quiet the gears, but it REALLY smoothed things out. It no longer sounds like an ice machine when I drive my booster with Perfection 3.8. Most importantly, hardly any dust, debris or hair was attracted to the gears.

Anyway, this stuff is still manufactured. Their website is here.

I don't know if my experience is unique, but I finally found a good lubricant for my micro R/Cs.

I used to "yo" alot, and I was quite good, I have 5-6 Yomega Yo-Yos, and can probably still do quite a few tricks, but I havent tried in a few years.

I can report that after this weekend of driving, the amount of "gunk" collected in the gears is very minor. There was some, but to be honest not much more than is normally there after extended driving. It only took a few swipes with my cleaning brush to remove the debris. Disassembly was not required (but I did remove the axle to check for dirt.)

The Prolix is still on the gears, and the amount of noise generated is still much less than before.

I think the key here is to use the slightest amount. I used a paper clip, by placing one drop on the end and then applying. I then used the paper clip to work it into the teeth.

It's important to note that I waited a while for the lube to "set" before I ran the car.

BTW, this test setup was my yellow Skyline. (MS PRO booster chassis, 12:1 gears, Perfection 3.8, Bit Char-G red tires.) The tested surface is a hardwood floor (that should probably be mopped... heh...)

Thanx for the tip NoPropMan. I was going to purchase a needle lube that the HO'ers use. I'll have to check this stuff out.
