what exactly are these little clones? Are they actually at par with real bit charges?

The Shens are actually decent, very fast cars. If you do a search under "shen" you will find many references & posts about them.
My Shens (also sold under the "Rally Racer" name) are faster out-of-the-box than all of my Bits/MicroSizers. Definately, my clones of choice!

I like Shens so much that I replaced my microsizer & bit PCBs with Shen PCBs  The Shen PCBs are quicker to respond (quicker acceleration), and seem to put a little more power to the steering as well.
