That depends on what you mean by better. Shens are much faster stock and the zips quality is 1000times better. With a mod or 2 you can get the shens speed but the quality of a shen is still gonna suck compared to a zip.
I have both and don't get me wrong, if you are only getting 1 car and don't wanna mod then by all means go for a shen.

That's because they are faster and cover more dirty ground!
Shen's are so inexpensive, you can own both!
I've seen them as low as $12.99 from retail stores, and less from online sellers.
The ZipZaps handle better, and if they break, you can take 'em back to RS and get another. My biggest gripe with ZZ's is that they are always out of stock. Hopefully they will gear up production to meet demand.

I'd say neither- go with bits. If you can't get one, try game stores, some import real bits from japan. Otherwhise, ZipZaps are high-quality and nice-looking for a mere $20. The speed is easily fixable with a 1.50 battery set from allelectronics.com. See Bit Science.

If you can only get 1 car, and don't plan on modding it, I would say get the SHEN. I have both, and I have had more fun with my SHEN, than with my zipzap or my $30 microsizer.

7 Shens and counting, 4 with 2.6 for oval racing, 3 with 2.2s for road racing. For $12.00 a piece for these kinds of speeds and run times why would you buy anything else. Just throw a 2 hole stabulus bar in the front or drill a couple of holes in the stock one and your set to go. Regards, Szandor

i just swapped my shen pcb into my zipzap and oMaGoSh!!
speed power and run time of a shen and the control stability and customizing versatility of a zipzap!
i think zipzaps would be the freakin ultimate micro if they only had better pcb's
