I've heard that graphite powder works really well. And since it's dry, it won't sling around and make a mess.

No!!!!!!!!!!! Don't use vasoline! Sh!t wll accumlate in th vasoline and get in the moving parts of your car, thus ruining it. Use bab powder because it repels water, or graphite lube ( what I use ) which just plain works. Either way, NO WET LUBE!!!!!!!!!!

Graphite powder can be bought at home depot or probably any place that makes replacement keys (it's usually at the section that makes keys). It's a couple of bucks for a small tube.

Baby powder works too and smells baby fresh

Vasoline will also attack the plastic on the car and ruin it. Don't even try it.

Something I learned when I worked repairing pinball machines and video game machines-
There are some mechanisms that only work well when dry.

Just as was said before, petroleum jelly will:

a) Attack the plastics in the chassis, making it soft, and ruining it.

b) Attract and hold dust and debris, thickening and making an unpleasant performance-killing paste.

I personally use nothing. Even a dry lubricant can potenially collect in lightly oiled places within the motor itself.
If someone could prove it makes the plastic wear slower I might consider it though.

I clean the gunk out with a brush from a pile I have from old electric razors, and maybe use a can of air with the tube on it to blow out the dust. That's really all you should need.
I also ditched running my cars on carpeting, since it is ALL fibers.

I like that everyone is always thinking of little things to boost the performance of these little cars, it's great!
There are some great ideas being circulated.

Table, shmable! I have set mine up from the begining to run on our kitchen floor, which really lets it top out.

My next car will probably also be a bit fast (pun) for a table top, but my third will be totally tabletop slow.
