These clone cars are appearing all over the place. We make a point of testing them all. And the results are almost always the same. The particular car you are looking at is not up to Tomy quality as are many of the clones. In particular, it will not turn in as sharp and wouldn't handle well on our test track. Additionally, the motor seemed to be a slightly different size (or the motor mount) making it difficult to change motors.
We've tested them all: the only clone I like is the the one in the tear drop case that closes on top of the car (made in China -- by "Thunder Car"). Although not as good as the Tomy with respect to build quality, the Thunder Car had longer range (20') and longer running time. The charging case was also appealing. But it still won't handle as good as the Tomy.
Even the new Digi-Q with the very cool digital controller (an awesome controller both aesthetically and ergonomically) is not a good car for racing in our opinion (we've tested 6 Digi-Q's and they are difficult to control at low speed no matter how you set the controller).
The only other car worth considering (besides the very unique motorcyle) is the new Yokomo 1/60. Although our test sample had a quality glitch (noisy servo), the Yokomo seemed to handle very nice in the turns -- there's no substitue for proportiaonl steering and throttle.
I've got another 5 Yokomos coming soon and will let you know how they test on our Lego track. --Lorne
