My Desktop Racer/panther does that. Im not sure if my Tomy does.
One thing I have noticed with the panther is that the gear on the motor is not as close to the idle gear as it shoud be,
so mayb it is making it harder for the motor to work in one direction than in the other! Hence the faster reverse speed!
Look through the forum, or do a search on how to postion the motor correctly.

not only does my skyline go faster backwards - it steers better too lol! usually it turns wide when going left, but going backwards its tight going both right and left.
btw the drift axle is a hoot - i can only drive it backwards too to get a mean drift - if i drive it forwards it just constantly does donuts lol.

Talking about axles, my clone's axle is loose on the wheel,so u can actually pull the single wheel off!
Does this need to be able to move on its own, or shall i glue the wheel to the axle?

push vs. pull theory
my theory is that it is easier to pull than it is to push.......
push = forward
pull = reverse
no details, thats what i believe....... l8r

So we need a front wheel drive bit so it will go faster when going forward!
I think ur push pull theory is correct, as most of my cars do reverse faster!
