GO BALL BEARING...solution to those pesky axel problems

hey guys, when I was thinking of making my pan chassis, i came across some kick a$$ micro ball bearings that could potentially replace those stupid loose axels on clones and such. These bearings come in a 1mm inner diameter which is perfect for the bit charge axels. all you would have to do is cut out a small circle and glue the bearing place. tadah, you will never have to worry about loose axel again.

i will post results when i get them from the NTN bearing corp of Canada. here is what they look like if you have no idea what i am talking about..

Just one question:
How would you get your axle on there?

pull one end off...

you pull one end off of the axel and thread it thru the two bearings, then super glue the wheel back on to the axle. or even better you could cut the axel in half and link the two ends with a small peice of tubing that would grip it tightly.

then you could take it out if you needed to clean the bearings with out needing to reglue the wheel.

I think that 1mm is too small for the axle. I have found some bearings for this also. They are .047 (size R0) which is like 1.19mm. Hope you didn't order them yet.

Where to buy bearings

I found this bearing site that has some that should work. Scroll down to "Inch Miniature Bearing sizes" or "metric miniature 1mm to 9mm bore". bdebde, was that .047 the size of the bearings you found or did you measure the axle? I lost my micrometer

They're not cheap but if you buy 25 or more you get 20% off.

wow, it's like 10 bucks per ball bearing on average on that page.

Yeah I measured the axle. The bearing size is R0 or 3/64 (.047).

Here are a couple others:

https://sdp-si.com/eStore/

Yeah the price is pretty steep, that is why I have been putting off buying any. After I get a couple other projects done, I will have to get some.

that second link has some other interesting stuff like clutches and universal joints and some of them seem pretty small too....i can imagine a 2+speed transmission and front and rear independent suspenions and all wheel drive in a chassis that still fits on the palm of your hand excuse me while i grab a couple of towels to wipe this drool off myself

Man, those bearings really aren't cheap. I'd like to get some bearings but I'm having a hard time rationalizing the cost. I wonder if the speed gain would even be that significant. I know bearing made a big time difference in my 1/10 scale cars, but I was replacing 16 bushings with 16 bearings, in a 5 lb. car, but how big of a difference could 2 axle bearings make in such a small car? And what about the front wheels, bearings there could also be beneficial, but bearings on all four wheels would be getting insanely expensive for a $20 RC.

So I'm wondering, just how am I going to rationalize this to myself, because I want to do it.
