Where do I start?
Well, I managed to pick up a Bit Char-G clone (not a very good one) for $9.99 from a local drugstore. It seems to be an OK vehicle but the body is atrocious and the controller is rather lame. It seems to be a good base for experiments but I would rather start my TinyRC career with a REAL Bit Char-G. I have read through the QFM site and was truly impressed with the amount of modifications available for these little buggers. This is not my first adventure into smaller scale RC (I own three Micro RS4s) but the practicality of these tiny cars is truly intriguing. It seems as if you could just have one of these cars with you at all times and be ready to play at any given moment. What do you guys recommend I start with? I was looking at the Auto Modellista set, the Initial D set, or the Skyline set (I want some options for bodies). The Speed Racer set is also quite high on my list, I mean...look at the body! When are the Mini Coopers supposed to come out? What is the best/cheapest online shop? Where should I purchase 'hop-ups'? What type of mods should I start with? I apologize for asking A LOT of questions, I should say newbie questions but I have quite a bit of catching up to do on these forums and there is no way I can take in all the info you guys have been so kind as to post. I appreciate all your help and hope to be a contributing member to these forums as long as I own an RC car. Thanks in advance for your comments!

There are a lot of good places online to get a real BitChar-G. I've bought a couple of mine recently from www.tinyrctoys.com. They seem to have quite a few of them in stock and are located in the US. Other online retailers are based in Hong Kong, and Japan. You'll have to wait to get your order from them, and if you add up the shipping cost, it works out to be the same. As far as which one to get, the Automodellista set comes with a boost chassis and has 4 different bodies. I just bought a set, and the details are great. You can't go wrong with the original Bits. Almost anything can be done to them, and they seem to be of higher build quality. Welcome to the board. There are quite a few people here that are helpful. Make sure your read the FAQ before posting questions that are already answered.

Thanks alpha1, what exactly is a 'boost chassis'? The Auto Modellista set is neat but I am not a fan of the body styles, the paintjobs seem too garish for my tastes. I will check out www.tinyrctoys.com Thanks again.

Hi HO502cid,
Welcome to our little world! Regular BitChar-Gs are only one speed, a Booster car is a 2 speed car. Unboosted a car will be at like 75% speed (of a regular bit), and if you hit the boost, it jumps to like 120% (of a regular bit). Great for having a fast car and taking it into the twisties.

Welcome! I was a newb to micro r/c too just a few weeks ago. I loved the Mach too, and now that I have it it's a beauty and alot of the mods can be done with it - but alot can't. The good thing about the Auto Modellista set is the #of bodies you get with the set, (4) so you can practice on one you don't like. Also as mentioned it is a booster set, so it can go two speeds.
The Initial D set is sitting on my desk right now (for a friend) and the # of bodies apply here too, since you get 2. You get a weak motor but as you said you like to mod, so upgrade away! Also the bodies look like they can support the light mods, etc unlike the Mach body, which is not clear plastic and have painted-in light apetures. Also the Trueno (Toyota Corolla) and Mazda RX-7 look more realistic than alot of the other bodies out there, which could appeal to you.

Too bad I haven't done any significant mods yet. Laziness gets you.

I noticed you're in WA ... I've not been to Tacoma much but if you happen to be in the Seattle area and want a close look at the Bits ... Go to AutoFreaks (I thinks that's the name, it's a car acc store) in "the great wall mall" near IKEA in southcenter area. There prices are quite expensive ($42-59) but if you just want a close look to decide and then order online. Also In "chinatown" there is a store called "International hobby" they sell "bits too" still expensive ($39.99).
