yes, yes you can!
if your camera has a serial port (RS232), but you don't have a free serial port, you can use a USB->RS232 converter (about US$19)... this is what i use w/my HP200 digital camera on the computers i have that do not have an RS232 port [i have far too many computers, btw - about two dozen at last count]...
if your digital camera has a USB port, simply install the requisite driver (which is unnecessary if you use Linux, btw), then attach the camera to your computer using a USB cable (usuallly with a proprietary cable connector on the camera end)...
my other solution is to simply take pictures, then remove the compact flash card and transfer the pictures off the flash using a PCMCIA slot on a notebook (such as my titanium powerbook or sony vaio) or on another box on which i use an actiontec PCI PCMCIA slot adapter, which offers two Type II slots for PC cards... of course, your camera may use a secure digital (SD) or other media card, but adapters are available...
other digital cameras may use a sony-type memory stick for storage (or a floppy or mini-CDRW, such as some sonys)... how you transfer pics will depend on your digital camera's ports or other hardware features... btw, i wish more cameras supported USB 2.0 right now, but i guess we'll have to wait... RS232 and USB 1.X are really kinda slow for transfers, which is why i use a direct read off the compact flash...
digital camera are great fun and once you get over the cost of initial purchase, pay for themselves over and over - no processing costs!
now if i can only find a small enough r/c digicam for my zz....
:-)
