Using a full size r/c controller?

Those of you who are into/own any sort of big 1/12-1/4 r/c scale cars know about each crystal in the r/c cars are important and that if you have the same band as someone else, you could essentially end up driving there car. Most of the cheap AM radios you get come in a 27mhz crystal band and then it gets more specific like 27.xxx (xxx being other numbers like .145 so you can race 10 cars with 27mhz band but have no conflicts because the last three digits are different from other cars) Anyhow I found out what band the microsizer is to be exact for the 27mhz. It was 27.145 which is in the car and controller, just read the back of your manual. It may be different though cause my microsizer is the canadian one.

Anyhow my plan would be to buy a full size crystal of 27.145, alternate it into the controller (meaning controllers for the nitro cars and such) and hopefully if all goes well, you get a radio with a long distance and possibly proportional throttle, not sure about steering cause of the design of it. For those of you confused... well this is kind of confusing to explain, so..... give it a shot if you are into those large r/c cars (meaning "non-tycoish" kind, more along the lines of HPI, Serpent, and Tamiya), i would try it but i have a 49 mhz car . Maybe i should purchase a 27 mhz car soon.

wow...thats a REALLY good idea. i never thought of actually finding out what the specific crystal was. I have a couple of radios but not the right frequency at all... if you do it, i will seriously consider trying this out.

good idea! hope it works.

There are a lot of toy-grade R/C cars out that run on 45 and 27MHz frequencies. You might be able to find one used to test it out.
There may be a problem with the type of signal that the Bit is expecting to see. It might be looking for a specific length pulse that other transmitters don't put out. If I had a dual channel osciliscope, I could do a comparison and give you the answer right now, but sadly I lack the funding for one.

I have two sets of r/c crystals for my full scale controller 27.195 and 27.045, i use them for racing. I'm gonna have to check if they have a crystal set at 27.145.

Let us know the results if you find the right freq. It would be nice to know for ergonomics sake.

Cool

I sorta had the same idea...I have a 1/10 R/C car that runs on 27.045 I believe and tried it with my 27mhz Z-Car...unfortunately it didn't work. And I don't know the exact frequency that the Z-Car is running on.

Its a worthwile trial. But actualy you have a two stage problem.

The first "Xtal" is basically solved by the wide open receiver designed. It will accept a signal around 27mhz { if the car is tuned for 27 } Its not a specific tuned for a specific freq. There is no xtal in the car just a crude receiver.

The 2nd catch and may schuttle things using any other controller is that the Receiver-Decode function IC is looking for the codes generated from a TX2C chip. Its basically a simple cheep low cost chips set consisting of a "encoding" TX2C with a "decode" RX2 chipset. Unless the controler you are trying has that chip set with the correct resistor on its OSC pins the car will egnore any commands from any other controller. If it does then as some have found out not all direction are wired up the same way.

The TX2C/RX2 chip set are five function. No functions are porportional just on/off. All it has is F,B,L,R & boost.

Good luck on the hunt.
