Wow! SE internals are NO JOKE!
This evening I did a full transplant of internals from 1 car to another.
I was not expecting the kind of work I had to go through! Lots of screws to keep track of, multiple solder points, putting things in/out in a certain order so everything fits back properly, resoldering wires with certain wires in front of others on the PCB (so it will lay flat enough to mount back on the chassis).
A solid challenge to any mod enthusiast, not to mention a fairly strong test of patience as well.
After tonights journey, I can now call myself among the people with intimate knowledge of the innards of an SE and the transplanted car is doing very well too.

Hehe, ya din't know what you were in for, did ya LOL?
The most extensive work that I've done on any of my Zaps is a few PC board swaps on my original series versions (swapping out bad PC boards, or older v1 PC boards). Gotta say that is the biggest pain in the butt that I've ever seen, what with the tiny hair-sized steering wires and such.
I'm sure that the SEs would be even more difficult (due to having a lot more components), I've had a few apart, and wouldn't wanna even think of trying to swap the components out LOL!
My hat's off to ya! -

Transplants are definitely no job here, but I feel now that I've gone through it twice, the next time around (NOT likely there'll be a next time, but IF) it'll be A LOT easier because I know all the little gotchas.
HUGE help to have an extra car to use as a reference when putting it all back together!

There is a lot of stuff crammed in that little chassis. I took one apart to salvage parts from it and was impressed with the number of teeny tiny screws in particular. And not all the same size either. I didn't plan to reassemble the car, so I just tore into it. I can definately see how another car to refer to on reassembly would be mandatory.

You bet, having second car to refer to got me out of many a jam.
They are complicated buggers. I've killed 3, and 2 of them I can't figure out why. I've combined the parts from them, to build another working one, and that one was driving me crazy because apart it worked, together it did not. Turned out all those tiny wires were getting smashed together, and shorting out. Just had to reroute them.
What a pain that was to figure out.
