stage 2 9 tooth vs. 8 tooth

i have the 8 tooth stage 2 in my supra and the 9 tooth in the skyline

now the 9 tooth should have more top end than the 8 but in my case the 8 tooth is quicker off the line(it should be) but it also has more top end

both have the same setup

yellow springs in back
soft slicks
same gear in the rear end
bearings in both

any ideas?

Try switching the motors between cars... it is possible that one car is just built a little better than the other, has less drivetrain loss, etc. It could also be that the motor with the 9 tooth is not broken in as well, wasn't built as well, etc. These motors in general aren't the most consistent of performers.

more teeth=faster acceleration, less top speed.

less teeth=slower acceleration, more top speed.

hm, you should preface that statement by specifying on the that you're referring to the teeth on the cone gear. If you are referring to the pinion, you have it reversed,

8 tooth will give you great acceleration, but no top end
while
12 tooth will give you lack luster accel, but great top end

Skurge420:

You are right that the 9 tooth has more top end but only if it has enough torq to reach that top end.

The reason you are seing the 8 tooth having more top end is that even though it's max possible is less, is has the torq to reach that speed while the torq limited 9 tooth can't even get to that speed let alone it's higher top speed.
