180 size motor and upgrades
Hey guys i'm new here but have been lurking for quite some time
I have modified my xmods to accept a 180 size motor( the motor will fit in fine, but you can only use the front motor mount ) and i am currentlly working on a h-bridge to upgrade the fets and a current limiting low drop voltage regulator to provide a limited amount of power to the electronics,so i can have my cake and eat it too.(the voltage regulator will provide a lower voltage to the electronics and limit the current, i think the reason people are frying their cars with 6 cells when they add the lights is beacuse of current draw ) I am studying electrical engineering in college and these xmods seem to be not only fun but also a good way to apply what i have learned. i have also found that the team orion springs for the micro rs4 fit in the xmods perfectly without any modifictaions and are easily a 1000x stiffer. once i finish the h-brdge and the fet upgrade i will sell this upgrade as a package with the motor. in theory, it should allow someone to run 6 cells with a 180 size motor which has 120 gram/cm of torque compared to the stock AND upgrade motor which both only have 5.3 gram/cm (!!!!) this motor has neodynium mags and silver brushes, so no further upgrades would be required. the upgrade motor radshack sells is the same motor they sell for electronics projects seperately, thats how I found out the torque of the stock and upgrade motors, since the are both the same. I will post pictures as soon as i get access to a digital camera. see ya

Hey, do you know where we can some pics of the motor, or some more info about them?

here' s the info on the 180 size motor, this is the same motor sold as a upgrade for the mini-z by trinity or team orion (?)
http://www.mabuchi-motor.co.jp/engli...ff_180phsh.pdf
and here's proof of the lack of torque for the stock and upgrade motors
http://www.radioshack.com/product.as...t%5Fid=273-258
i'm pretty sure the motor sold as the x-mods stock and upgrade are the same , but i can't verifiy completely, since the company that makes the motors, star motor company, doesn't have a website with info
BTW, if anyone can tell me whether radio shack is selling replacement parts, like a receiver assembly for the car w/servo, that would be nice.

Radio Shack is going to sell replacement parts. Look towards the bottom of the first post http://tinyrc.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=13985

Stock (Stage 1) motor is the same as the Stage 2 except in the number and guage of windings. Those $1.99 motors are not the same as the XMods motors, they are made by "Super Jack", and though they are a 130 size, they look otherwise completely different.
I just unwound both a stage 1 and stage 2 armature, and here is what I have to report:
Stage 1: 85 turns, wire thickness is less than 30 gauge. Probably 32 or 34.
Stage 2: 49 turns, 30 gauge.
Just for a kick, I also unwound my (ruined) X Speed: 49 turns, 30 gauge. Same as the stage 2...
I wonder why the X Speed seems noticably faster than the Stage 2 when running unloaded? This does explain why I can run with X Speed cars even with the Stage 2, though.

thanks neurokinectick, that post will certainly help and thanks for clearing up the issue about the stock and upgrade motors. I am currently looking for a outlet of mabuchi motors, specifically the 130, 180 and 260-280 size motors. i am hoping with some modifications i might be able to fit a 260 flat can (!!) motor in to my car. I have just tested out the FF-180PH from a surplus dealer and it has given the car a great deal of torque, allowing me to do full 360's with a sharp turn. if anyone wants to do this mod, remeber to check the direction of rotation for the motor you plan to upgrade to, since the FF-180PH spins in the opposite direction of stock, requiring a reversal of the leads. the only problem i have noticed is a severe drop in range. I'm not sure if my Tx battery is just low or if the motor is drawing too much current. bench testing the stall current resulted in ~4-5 amperes @7.2v, which may mean that the motor is drawing a bit more at the lower 6-4.8v of alkaline and nimh batteries, respectively. i also noted that the fets heat up much more and quicker, but have yet to see any damage. i will post more resluts and findings later this week.

I found the problem with my range. the Tx antenna must be fully extended
