Completely custom Audi R8C/GTP body for my ZZ

Speed. I needed more of it. With a quick trip to the hobby shop, I was able to pick up 2 lexan 1/64th slot car (HO Slots) bodies. I bought the Audi R8C/GTP and the Porsche GT1/GTP car bodies.

I am not kidding, these things weigh nothing. This will easily be the mod that nets me the most speed! The best part is, you can make the body much lower to the ground than the stock bodies.

I have one of the bodies "built", and now I am going to paint it.

Here are some pics:

Til next time!

Angry Set back...man am I stupid...

Welp, having NEVER messed with lexan bodies before, I have a bit of a set back after painting them. I used the correct paint, one made for lexan bodies, but I did not know you are supposed to paint lexan bodies from the inside. NOT the outside.

*Sigh*, welp, live and learn, now it looks like it will be a few more days till I can run the lexan bodies. Bummers.

Serious bummer... I remember my first r/c was a Tamiya 4WD Hot Shot, man that thing was awsome, I made the same mistake. Had to give it a bath in paint thinner real fast.

Welp good luck 2nd time around, can't wait to see it.

Thanks for the tip...

I just picked up my 1998 Nissan R390GT1 body.

What happens if you paint the outside? the details don't show up as well?

It's been a while since I've done it... but going from memory you use flat acrylic paint, so if you paint it on the outside it looks like a coat of primer. When it's painted properly on the inside it gives the apperance of high gloss.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, like i said it's been a while.

Sweet! I have tons of flat acrylic. I guess that makes sense, looks glossy as hell since lexan is...well...glossy.

If you are actually custom manufacturing these things, you have a gold mine on your hands. The biggest complaint for ZZ's besides frequency issues, is the bodies. Totally sweet idea and very nice body...are you making them yourself? Kinda confused I guess

sorry for the nasty photos. My digicam is cheap as hell, I'll try to get better ones soon.

This is my 1998 Nissan R390 GT1 body. You can see the engine bracket sticks out behind it. Oh well:

This is my line up. just the red cobra, the f&f bodies. I only have one ZZ chassis right now though.

I'm looking forward to seeing your Audi and Porsche bodies, Latency!

I'll vouch that the lexan bodies are the way to go if you wanna move fast!

ax0n Edit:

Replaced nasty gross photos with nicer ones.

Looks good axon

Question for you, did you spray the body work, or hand paint it?

With me screwing up, and painting the outside, both bodies are flourescent flat yellow. Kinda funny actually.

I am going to go out today at lunch and pick up some decals for it to put it in race trim, with sponsor logos etc. Right now, I am not pleased with how they look, but they will likely look better in full race trim.

I really liked the lexan bodies, and man do these cars MOVE with them on. These bodies are soooooo much lighter than the stock and FF bodywork. There is no comparison, night and day difference. I am very pleased with the performance and speed now.

The true test will be tonight when I race Team Gryphic Racing after work. Having not raced with the new body work yet, I am excited to see how they fair out.

I hand painted the body with flat acrylic, using a few different brushes. the inside had lines to kind of contain the paint, so I didn't need to mask anything off. I cut air vents in the front gill and cut the air ducts out on the top rear of the car with an x-acto. I've never messed with slot car bodies or any other kind of r/c body you have to paint. I painted the back window black because that's about where my hook and loop tape sits, I left the side and front windows clear, painted the spoiler and headlights chrome with some silver ENAMEL (I hope it stays put!), and the tail lights yellow.

I also put some hook/loop tape up front. It stays together well, even when my cat decides he needs to bat it across the floor and into walls

I'd still like to see your work when it's done. I might pick up some more slot bodies. I think I could have done a better job, and I don't know if it shows, but the chassis is really too tall for an R390 body, unless you wanted the R390 off road edition Seriously, I only found a very few bodies where I went. I should look for something else, that won't look like a 4x4.

I have a Matchbox Ford Focus ZX3 (One of my cars in real life is a ZX3), and holding it next to the ZZ chassis, it looks like if I could make a body using my matchbox car as a mold, it would fit perfectly, and since it's a hatchback, there'd be enough room in the back to not worry about cutting it out for the motor and electronics.

Best of luck with your project!

How do you guys go about attaching the lexan bodies to the ZZ?
Just cut slots in them for the chassis mount points or what?
How well do they say on?

I put hook and loop tape inside.

2 1/4 inch square pads on the plastic electronics cover, all the way in the back, and one 1/4 inch square pad in front of where the suspension bars snap in. Then i put the loop pads inside the body after it's painted, and tried to line 'em up as close as possible. My HO Scale body was actually too short. If you look in my photos you can see the back end of the motor bracket hangin' out.

Here is what I did...

I just put the body on the chasis, and marked the desired height, and then just cut the slit to use to go over the stock tabs. There was a ton of room in the bodies I bought, so I was able to really "lower" the car by makeing the bodies lower to the ground.

The bodies fit very snug, and have yet to fall off. Much better fit than the hard stocker plastic bodies.

It took some time to cut the slits, but an xacto knife does the trick.
