Hi!

My first Mini-X Mod and what i have done so far:

Mounting the very popular Tamiya wheels.
Raised the Mini-X by cutting the suspension stops.
Changed the motor to a Topcad R2 Modified.
Modified the gearbox to increase the gear ratio.

Ground clearance is about 17 mm.



Most of the modifications were described and discussed in this forum. So I have to thank you all.

I made the same experience as you did. I burnt my stock motor within 5 minutes driving with the monster wheels.
I am using 6 cells and a GM SX3R esc, which has no limit with 130 and 180 motors. So I decided to use a Topcad R2 Modified motor. I use this motor in the overland as well, and i think it is one of the best 130 you can get - comparing price and value. It is fast and has a lot of torque.
Going 4 wd with a standard 130 motor means modifying the gear box and changing the motor mount - but "how to".
I had the same idea as you, using a main power shaft with a pinion and spur gear combination. My pinion gears are from the overland or hpi micro. I have them from 9T to 13T. The spur gear is from a cd-rom drive with disc changing mechanic. The diameter was perfect to fit on the drive shaft without changing/cutting the chassis.

Overall gear ratio is 12 : 1

pinion gear (motor) 9 T
spur gear (power shaft) 25 T
pinion gear (differential) 8 T
differential gear 35 T

The ratio between pinion and spur gear is 2.77 (25T / 9T), which is near to the ratio 2.67 (34T / 12.7T) calculated by "Hooters Driver" in your "get my motor burnt" thread

I did not change the pinion gear yet, because the car goes pretty good, almost to fast

Maybe i will make a "how to?", if there is enough interest. But i have to do more real offroad testing, to be sure that everything works well. I already changed the steering, cause i broke two sub-micro servo. Now I am using a Hitec HS85 with metall gear and a servo saver from the Hpi Micro. I hope that this combination performs better than the one shown in the pics. But something else will break - i am sure

But, most (if not all) of the mods i have done, were already posted in this forum. I had some of the ideas too, but the posts of the "mini-x masters" help me a lot - especially in avoiding mistakes. So the honor is not on my side. Maybe with my next mod

what electronics are you using, and can you post a pic of your motor mount

receiver: jeti rex 5
esc: gm purple sx3r
servo: hitec micro servo hs81MG (in the pics you see the my first attempt with a sub-micro servo - not recommended, will break)


The motor mount consists of two aluminium bars. Screwed to the chassis at the position where the on/off switch normaly should be. I have drilled two holes in the motor case and cutted "Gewinde" (i don't no the correct english word - "holes" for screws), as they are in bigger (180, 300, 540, etc.) motors.




The shape of the aluminium parts are modified for a perfect fit to the chassis and the motor.

you are the man. i hope you dont mind, i need to use that type of motor mount on my next mod. looks like it will work perfect

one more question for you, where did you get the 5chan receiver from. that thing looks leet.....i could add an extra servo to raise and lift the x. Hit Switches!!

The motor mount works, you should try it. The only problems is, finding a spur gear that will fit.

I have got the receiver from my LHS. In my country it is available in 35 and 40 Mhz. Attention - it is a FM receiver.
Here is homepage of the manufacturer. Raising and lifting - that's cool. I will use an additional servo for my 4x4x4 project.

dude that is one leet steering setup, i would do the same if i had the room. a servo saver would be nice

I have enough room.

I had to put the esc and the receiver on top of the battery pack. I needed some extra room, where the esc and receiver are usually placed, because of the big tires.

So now, there is plenty of room for a real big micro servo
