Batteries?
Just wondering what kind of batteries work the best and last the longest. I was going to get some nickel metal hydrid rechargeable batteries, I know they last longer, but will i get the same power?

just get the rechargable battery pack from rs. it has an awesaeome runtime and at peak charg the thing runs like a mada man. also its only $25 and comes with 8 batteries and a charger. if you were to just buy 4 batteries it costs $20.

Nicads that RS sells give a little more punch but the nimh's give that longer run time.

disadvantage of Ni-MH vs Alkaline
Ni-MH's are 1.2 volts...1.2 X 4 = 4.8 volts
Alkaline are 1.5 volts... 1.5 x 4 = 6 volts
So w/Ni-MH you get a lot less top speed(more volts = more top speed) but the run time more than makes up for it.

Assuming they are NiMH. Don't go trying to recharge alkalines .

The Xmods charger is a delta peak charger capable of charging Ni-MH or NiCd rechargeable batteries. It will not do Li-Ion, Li-Poly or Rayovac IC3.

Ni-MH's and NiCDs will increase the speed of your Xmods because they have less internal resistance than Alkalines.

Thanks Crusader4x for mentioning the internal resistance issue. Those who are not familar with this issue assume alkalines would make the car faster because of the higher voltage which is not usually the case. The internal resistance determines how fast a battery can deliver its energy and how well they work in high drain applications like RC cars. That is why NI-cads generally have more "punch", alkalines typically deliver slightly longer run times, and NI-MH battteries are a good compromise between the two. Also rechargeable alkalines are a poor choice for a hi drain application like RC cars. The RS XMODS charger set is a good value for the price and the charger is very small when folded up. Other brands of NI-MH batteries may make the car faster as mentioned in prior posts.

I thought NiMH usually have longer runtimes than alkaline, due to higher capacity. Or do you mean the higher discharge rates cancel out the greater capacity?

The higher discharge rate means that it can potentially have an affect on run times depending on the motor, gear ratio, friction in drive components and so on. It really depends on the application as to which will last longer. Battery discharge rates can also vary from one brand to another so unfortunately there are a lots of variables to consider. NI-MH batteries are the best compromise between performance and run times in my opinion.
