Try this:
http://www.geocities.com/pikamoy/BuntaZZmods.html
It's the famous Bunta's guide. It's really basic, probably the best. I'm a newbie too, but I been looking at ways to try a dual cell and I'm gonna do it once I get the stuff together. Here's some more that might help too:

I guess the tri-cells are the same, but with a third battery between the two. You just hook it up, + end to - all the way through. I'm sure the cells have to be the same too. The rule of thumb I heard for multi-cells is 2 AA's in the charger for every cell. Like I said, I haven't done any of it for myself, so listen to me or not. Whatever. But this is what I've found. Hope it helps.

uumm actually tri-celling a zap is probably the easiest dual cells i have ever done. check this out. have you seen striders dual cell? well see this si how you do it ill show you how i tri-celled my zip zap. First as of any normal dual cell break off the tab that touches the - side of the battery. NOT ALL OF IT just the part that touches. you can do that by bending it up and down until it wears and breaks. next you solder a wire on top of that - contact and solder it to the back of one of your 3 batteries. next solder a wire from the + side of that battery to the - side of your second battery. and then solder another wires from the + side of that battery onto your final battery on the - side. now heres the tricky part kind of. only hard part is to avoid breaking the wires on the pcb. get your third battery ( the last one to be soldered) and stick it in the original battery slot. next lasy the other 2 batteries vertically laying down and it will all fit like this =| get it? these are the two batteries = this is the third battery that goes to the normal car | if you lay them right they will look like this = | i would post pics but i dont know how lol. i made one right now in my microsoft painting shop and i dont know how to paste it here so srry. oh also USE NIMH CELLS NOT NICD OR ELSE IT WILL SUCK AND MOSTLY LIKELY NOT WORK!!!!! I REALLY REALLY REALLY RECOMMEND NIMH CELLS.

The easiest way to triple cell your zz is to use the layman's cell mod.

i did a layman's dual cell to my bit clone (3 wouldn't fit, chassis wouldnt flex enough) and it is awesome. less runtime, but it makes up for that in speed. i already test fitted 3 cells in my zip chassis and it will work fine in there. im picking upa 350z zip this weekend and im gonna change the antenna, tri cell it, and maybe a few other things so we'll see how it does

your basic wiring is correct, but the charger has a + and - terminal also. you may need to switch which way the batteries are charging.
btw 3 celled zips rule!!!!
