i'd say that most likely? anything too hard would be out of your league anyway. because to be honest, it's not an easy task to build a custom box that's to specs with your subs anyway. Much less to build a nice one. I've got a box that's perfect for my subs, and it's one of those crap carpeted boxes... but it's sweet, it really sounds good. But as far as for show? it'll get me nowhere.
Being a ricer has nothing really to do with sound system. since the guys who spend the kind of money for a sweet sound system (for shows and such) ususally don't crap their cars with garbage.
Incidentally I've never heard of a poycarbonate box in all my experience with sound shows and db drags... maybe you're thinking of the custom made fiberglass boxes? and plexi is the usual material for clear windows.
If you wanna make a box, just keep it simple. Find the right airspace according to the specs on your speakers... build a box that meets those specs for volume... and there you go.
Carpeting is avail. through many stereo places, as well as car shops. you want the compressed board, the kind that looks like it's made of saw-dust that's super compressed.
The truth is though, you're really better off buying a box, because between the wood, the corners, connectors, and the carpet (and glue) you're looking at a good amount of money. So you might as well spend the extra 50 bucks and get a little box somewhere premade. (it'll be worth your while for it to look clean.)

MDF
Medium
Density
Fiberboard
is the most common thing to make sub boxes outta. My friend with his concrete and plywood LOL and well they POUND THE SH!T OUTTA HIS STANDARD CAB. and can be heard about a block away but ya he also has 3way 6x9's behind the seat and sony 3" mids in the doors so there's a perfect balance of BASS mids and high's and so nothing is really overpowering anything else. in my research of concrete either it pounds or sounds like crap and rings like a bell so if your lucky it's good if not then bummer you're out a $5 bag of concrete and some plywood time to get mdf. there is such thing as plexieglass boxes but ya usually they're used as windows in bandpass boxes, amp racks ect... http://www.subthump.com/aplexiglass.htm
also for size you'll get really frusterated if u try to build a box that is perfect size for the air u need and also make it fit unless u have a van or something so what u should try to do is make it as big as u can that u see feasable. broken down make it fit then try to put air into it.
