Yeah I started out like that too, into the toy store stuff. My first car was a Tyco bandit. Between then and when I got into the hobby quality stuff, I had several Radio shacks vehicles, The Tyco typhoon hovercraft, Tyco heads up buggy (drivers head moved with steering), and my favorite (I think this is the name) Tyco Fast Traxx. It was the one with the two tracks like a tank but it seemed pretty fast for a tyco and could tackle just about any terrain.

hmmmmm now that i think about it... me and my friend each had one and raced each other all the time.... i guess we were lucky to catch 2 different frequencies... lol
heh, i thing bits are a better idea tho... no charging for 4 hours for 20 minutes of play, and.. well... we tend to spend a lot more, but they look cooler too ^_^ plus they're moddable like crazy
i think i stopped with the whole hobby thing for like 5 years... and just got into bits =P

auctually they are not 1/70 scale either. they are a different range of scales... for example 1/74 long, 1/64 tall, 1/70 wide.... or somthing like that. i did all the calculations a while ago.. they have what i have heard called a "cartoonish scale" hotwheels, and matchbox are called 1/64 scale.. they have different wheelbases, and lengths. those are closer to scale. unfortnately bits and zaps have a fixed wheelbase (unless you mod) so each car body is actually a different scale.(not all cars are exactly the same in dimensions..) NE way thats just my 2 cents....
