Question I need torque, not speed!

Kind Folks,

New to this hobby, but I love electronics, R/C's and toys.

I have just purchased a Microsizer S2000 (silver, 27 Mhz). It's coming in the mail.

After playing around with it in stock form, I will have an application for this MS that I need some help with. I need it to be slow (fairly) with good run time, and torquey. My son has a wooden train set that needs a powered locomotive that I would love to build. The gauge of the track is very close to the width of the MS, but I will need to do the following (some of these are theoretical, so jump in if I am wrong):

* since the stock MS has a 2.2 motor, I will need a 1.0 (heard it is the slowest and torquiest (is that a word?)
* need to use slightly narrower wheels/tires to exactly match the gauge of the track (gauge is the width between the "rails" of the track, which are actually grooves on the wooden track)
* will need to use the light blue gear set (slowest and torquiest)
* will need to vacuum form a locomotive body and perhaps add false wheels and axle after the drive axle of the MS. I want this to be "live" but not necessarily driven. Two motors may be in the future, but not at this time.
* perhaps add a Pot (potentiometer) to slow down the motor (I read about the Pot modification on this board, Thanks!)

I am using a MS because the track has cross-overs that can utilize the MS steering to go to another part of the track.

What is wrong with my assumptions and what else can I do to make it torquier (other than adding another motor)?

Sorry for the long post, but you guys sound like you know what you are talking about, and thought I would run it by ya'll first.

Put a dual or triple cell. It gives it a lot more power. I heard that the Auto Modellista sets with the boost on has more torque but the same speed than a normal car.

dont go for the 1.0... it's pretty weak the way it's been designed... the KIT racer 2.2 is one VERY torquey motor, or some clone motors, and im not too sure, but i think the 1.6 is a very torquey motor too...

try the dual cell. Also think about adding a second motor. Mine is not as fast as some of my single motor cars, but it has a lot of torque.

here's an idea that i've seen a few people do that i woudl love to do if i had the time, skill, and parts. cut off the engine assembly from another bit (or a cheap clone), cut it right along the wall that separates the battery/pcb section and the engine. then cut off the tab on your microsizer then attach the engine assembly from the clone to the microsizer with super glue, epoxy, or whatever you prefer.before gluing, make sure that when the microsizer is placed on its 6 wheels, that all 6 wheels touch the ground. then wire the 2nd motor in parallel, which you could do by running a wire from the motor contacts on the microsizer to the motor contacts on the 2nd engine assembly (hope that makes sense). then do a dual cell mod and that shoudl give it enough juice to run both motors. use same speed motors.if you got a voltmeter, use it to check the connections for your second motor. i'm pretty sure there's a picture of a dual motor somewhere in this forum. and 6 wheels looks better on a locomotive than 4 anyway

1.6 is your best bet for torque.

Torque and speed is not just about the motor, its also to do with which gears you use.

Have a look at the tomy gs-03 gearset .

Blue= Torque and Bril accelertion

Orange= Less Torque, Good Acceleration, good topSpeed

Teal/Greeny=Crap torque, doesnt really accelerate and top speed low---- but with a dual cell it would be really fast.

My verdict with a perfection 3.8 motor

1.6 gets another vote for me.. also try different gearing. (12:1 is also good)

here r some recent quote from other thread:

Quote:
The 1.6 has lots of torque, and with 12:1 gears installed, it will push a zipzap right off of my coffee table. (a little game we play - last car left on the coffee table wins)
Quote:
These 1.6 motors are really torque-monsters. It drove right over my mouse

I agree, 12:1 is the "power" gearset.
You'll want to limit the top speed of that train too, which the blue 12:1 set does too.

I love how inexpensive this hobby is!

on a microsizer..the best tq motor is a red zip zap motor.
a dual cell micro with a red zz motor will climb a 60+degree hill.
if your setting it up to pull a train..you'll easily have room for 3 batts.

to get an idea of the power of a 3 cell microsizer...well..it will run just under 8mph on a treadmill with instant off the line acceleration.
much better than the 3.8. using the tqy gearset..the car is uncontrollable...

actually the motors that come with the cheap clones tend to crush anything that tomy makes. the cars might be as good but the motors sure as hell are. also pullback wheels will give you more low end.

Thanks scotty...I forgot to mention that I bought a Microsizers gearset kit (that is identical to the gs-03) with the light blue gears included.

Thanks strider...does anyone make a custom gearset the is higher (ratio-wise) than 12:1? I really doubt I could fabricate this part myself.
