Ok, so get this you guys... I went to the mall tonite, and took one of my hallmates. I picked up a "micro-Q" and a "Thor", the thor being a bullet type, and the micro-Q looking like a bit box. My friend got a diff boxed car called "Top Skill".... Well the two boxed cars come with 2.2 motors, my existing "super racing" bullet clone has a 1.0, and it beats them. Well anyway, I'm tearing down the thor car for the hover cuz the overall chassis quality is terrible. The front wheels and knuckes ar wobbly and the rear wheels are shimmied. But the controller has a really long telescoping antenna and the range is good, so i'm just gonna butcher it and make the hover. Assembly starts tonight, so I will have some prelimenary pics up in a few hours.

oh, the carnage
Well, i guess the coils are staying in their home... I cut off the front portion, and will integrate it into the hover. Its motion will be parallel to the length of the craft, with a thin bit of music wire going to the rudders. To keep it from flopping about, there will be at least 2 supports along the way. This should also help the magnet stay inline with the two coils.
Like my homemade exacto? Blade glued to pencil and zip tied... I knew i forgot to bring one from home. oh well.

finally, the fan... doesnt put out much air. I tried both 2.2 and 1.0 motors. I'm gonna try to gear it with the 7 tooth pinion and the idler gear (like 18 tooth) and run a 4 or 5 blade fan. It will be shrouded in the end, so efficiency will be helped. A bigger, slower fan with higher pitch should give more thrust. The idea is to make this craft like a full-scale integrated craft, meaning it uses the same fan to lift and propell, with about a third of the air ducted under the hull. Maybe thats too much to ask of one of these motors, but my goal is simplicity. so try I will. I also realized that my crappy clone donor came with a 70mah nicd, so yay, something good... heres a pic of motor and soon to be discarded fan.

Well, the micro-q was not near as good as the bullet clone "Super Racing"... The micro-q, as to not cause any confusion, is not a digi-q. It is a bit-looking thing with normal wheel steering. Even tho it comes with a 2.2 motor, the micro-q is tons slower than the super racing. There is also a noticeable delay between the steering or throttle inputs on the controller and the action of the car. I would not recomend them. If you can get your hands on one, grab a "super racing" clone. At the mall in Greenville, NC, they are 2 for $30, so a good deal. Mine has great range, good top speed (3.1mph on the treadmill), and good acceleration. Unfortunately for some reason now pulls to the right, even with full left trim. I pulled the pins on the knuckles and changed the fronts to full size, but changed them back, and now it likes going right.
As far as the hovercraft, I havent done much. I have been busy at work instead of school now that i'm on break, but a lot of it is that i dont want to sit down and get all frustrated with it. My big hands and thick fingers dont like small parts. A buddy of mine found something that may work as a direct drive fan. Its the little spinny thing out of one of those cheapie whistles that makes the "WHEEEEEEEEEE" noise when you blow in it. Looks to be about the right size. I put a hole in the center but it was too big for the motor shaft (doh!) and so now i'm gonna try to find another one and try harder to get the hole right on it instead of filling in the gap on the first.

Hey have you got it working yet. I might try this. I made 2 RC hovercrafts but there much bigger and run on 0.049 gas engines. I would really like to see this hovercraft done. I wish I had thought of using something like Mylar for the skirt, the skirt on my hovercraft is made out of a garbage bag strips melted to each other. How can you join Mylar together like this?

I dont have it working yet... I'm still looking for some of the whistle things. All of the dollar trees around here are out. Mainly I have been busy with this semester's classes, partying, etc. For my larger craft, I am making a nylon skirt. Most fabric stores carry rip stop nylon or nylon flag bunting (which is thicker) The nylon is resistant to abrasion, lightweight, and good looking. I think mylar could be melted together like the garbage bag. For the nylon, however, sewing is probably best.

computer fan
i was wondering if the fan that keeps a comp. cool would work as the second fan to lift the body of the hovercraft
