Got my NSX-R today, here's my observations
Out of the box, my NSX-R was fully charged. When you turn on the car, the headlights go on as well. it stays on no matter what. And it's very bright! The brake lights blink on and off.
Once you turn on the controller, it syncs with the car, and the brake lights stay on permanent. Hitting the gas, the brake lights go off.
Once I adjusted the steering trim (which wasn't much) the car stays straight all the time. No need to adjust it at all, no matter what I put the car through. Carpet, launching off the desk down to the floor by accident, and so on. I got a Cox Beetle also, and
I have to adjust the steering avery few minutes.
The front wheels of the NSX-R seem to be the same as the standard DigiQ's, but it's a lot easier to steer than the Beetle.
Turns are smoother.
When the batteries start dying, the car just stops. But the headlights stay on strong. I haven't let the car sit there until the lights die out, so I might do that if someone wants to know the result.
The NSX-R runs even longer than the Cox Beetle. I haven't timed it by my watch yet, but it runs a few minutes more than the standard Beetle.
There's NO SCREW! Yep, you can just take the NSX-R apart! My Beetle on the other hand has one of those custom screws.
The lights are very useful when the car goes far away, or if you're in a dimly lit area. You can use the headlights and brakelights as guides for steering the car. In a titally dark room, the lights don't do much because you can see where you're driving, really.
I'm sold on the NSX-R, and I'm looking forward to getting either the RX-7 or the Trueno with real turning front wheels. I don't regret paying extra for the NSX-R. The Beetle is OK, but if I had the choice again, I would have sprung for another R type car instead. The NSX-R just seems better in a lot of small ways.
Hopefully the next generation of DigiQs will all be improved, and not just limited to these pricier R versions.
If you're debating about getting the NSX-R, I hope you do get it. It's really a blast

Gertman,
From what I read about the 4 type R cars, the Pitworks and the NSX-R are the same, with front and rear lights, and the RX-7 and Trueno have the moving front wheels instead of the light gimmicks. I'd really like to try either the RX-7 or the Trueno. Not that I'm complaining about the steering on the NSX-R

mattdaxlr8er,
I just tried out the Sigma Automotive drifting code (3431) and
I realized it's not a code, but settings. I'm going to start another thread on the codes vs settings after writing this, so please read that one for more info on the difference
With the 3431 setting, the car drifts very well on my vinyl floor! You have to be going full throttle at the turn, then let go of the trigger, turn the wheel, and pull the trigger again. The car will do a very nice drift around a corner!
However, the drifting didn't work too good on sharp turns, so I changed the setting a little and got these:
3451 (for drifting around sharp turns)
3471 (for drifting around hairpin turns)
These work great for me! The third digit is the steering angle, and chaning that affects how sharply you turn. 8 is the highest setting, but for me that was a little too much.
But the drifting is nice! With the 3471 setting, I can drift back and forth on my desktop and not fall off the edge.
If you get the controller, I think you'll enjoy toying with the settings!

thx, keal, you're a big helper. Hmmmm, do you know what is the capacity of the batterys in the nsx? and what is it in comparison with the pitworks?

matt,
I opened the NSX-R but I can't see what kind of batteries it has. It's the same green plastic wrap that's in the regular DigiQs.
I don't know how to take the circuit board off to get to the batteries, sorry I don' t have more info on it. I'm too scared to take apart the whole car just yet. But the car does run for about 12 or 13 minutes on a charge.

thats neat keal. I'll try to post reviews when get my 150 mah batts, imagine a 300 mah battery setup instead of the regular 160 mah. I'm pretty I'll have about 20 mins of run time.

matt,
I look forward to your review of the batteries when you get them! That would be so cool to have that much playing time

Here's some more info on the NSX-R that I gathered today.
Playing time: about 12 minutes of continuous play
Charge time when car is fully dead: 13 minutes
Charge time when car can't run but headlights are still on: 13 minutes
Amount of time headlights stay on after car can't run: 5 minutes
I found this interesting, because the headlights stay on for a long time after the car stops running. I thought this would have a major effect on the charge time, but it had no effect at all.
By the way, I'm still using Rayovac Ultra NiMHs in my controller. I don't know if using disposable alkalines would make a difference in charge times, so I'll pick up a pack of Energizers next week and try it out.
I'm having a very positive experience playing with the NSX-R, in case anyone is curious about that. To me it's worth paying the extra money for this car, not just for the front and rear lights (which have major visual impact if you like to show off your car to friends) but also it controls a lot better than my Cox Beetle. The Beetle, while fun to play with, is a lot stiffer in turns and tends to spin out a lot. It seems like some things were improved on the internals of the NSX-R but I can't confirm that, it's just what I think from playing with the car

I got my NSX today!
I love this car! It puts my other Digis to shame. I did find some bad points, But the good out weigh them easy. First bad- Lights are so bright that they shine through the cars body, second- The headlights point up to much so it doesnt help much in the dark (dont misunderstand, these lights are feirce! they just point too high to be useful.)Third- I had to mod the trigger bar inside the controller to take up some slack that was causing movement in the car when I wasnt doing anything. Godd points- Lights are BRIGHT!! Car looks awesome! Pops wheelies on full charge! HAS A SEALED GEARBOX!!!!(YES, it has the gears closed in to prevent the stoppages caused by dirt and hair on the old digis!) I will be buying the Tureno or the Pitworks tonight. I would love some comments from owners of the Tureno! I would like to know if the steering gimmick is helpful and if it is sturdy. BUY THE NSX, YOU WONT REGRET IT.
