I use a NiMH battery in the Z, and two of them in the ZipZap.

BabyKiller,
Nimh's are 1.2V. You can combine, 1, 2 3, or even 4 to make up to 4.8V. Max the receiver board can take is 5V.
The easy way to dual cell or triple cell is to use 2 or 3 nimh button cells which you should be able to squeeze in. You'll have a little less capacity than normal, but a small price to pay for the easyness of the mod. See the 'Laymans guide to dual cell'
Others talk about Lithium-Ion or Lithium Polymer batteries, these are 3.7V. For a start thats similar to triple cell so would probably only be useful for drag racing, second, you need a special charger, and third, you cant let the receiver PCB discharge it to nothing like you normally do, it kills the battery.
Never let your Li-Poly go below 3.0V.
Easiest as I say, is button cells. They're dirt cheap too.

Talking about Li-Poly, I reckon the little battery in the Nokia 8210/8310 would fit in a bit bus, and you could you charge it in the phone. Would make for a mean bus. But you'd rue the day you forgot to take it out and let it get discharged...

also there are cordless phone batteries that are two 1.2v cells shrinkwrapped. most are 3.6 and too big to fit in a bit. ive seen smaller 2cell ones that would probably fit under the body with a little work.
