Lego track - Surprised how good it works!
After spending the time and bucks on materials for four tracks for my racing group so far, I decided that re-workable, modular, legos might be the trick at this point. I saw some pix on various web sites of lego tracks folks had built, and was thinking that the lanes would be too small, and it would not be "raceable."
I had a bunch of old legos in my basement from my youth, and ordered two sets of road plates as a base. I know, I know, still more bux for the road plates, but hey, at least these are reconfigurable.
Anyway, I put together a nice sized track on my dining room table, and was very impressed by the size, speed, and general feel of the Lego track. My group will do some live racing on this track at our next gathering (12/20), and I will see how it works for head to head, but I'm favorably impressed so far with the ease of construction, flexibility, and raceability of the lego track.
Here is a pic:

lego road plates
Got the road plates here:
lego road plates
$28 for a set of ten was the least price I could find. Most places sell them for $35 or more.

traction
Traction on the lego road plates is fine. In our racing group we have classes for each race (1.0 class, where only 1.0 motors are permitted, and Unlimited class, where anything goes). In 1.0 class, the tracks work fine, traction is perfect, no problems getting around the track. In unlimited class, the main problem is not traction, but staying on the tracks -- the green "grass" areas around the track are certainly in play -- and even smashing into walls and seeing some legos fly is not uncommon. We love the possibility of parts of the track flying off and becoming "debris" on the track to avoid. Plus it really gives a thrill when you nudge someone into a corner and see his car go spinning and some lego parts go flying.
All in all, racing on lego tracks is my favorite so far!

hey man no offense or anything, but wouldnt it be easier if you just got some particle board or something and got some paint? you could make a larger track for a smaller price?

tracks
Sure, it might be easier and cheaper for ONE track to get particle board and paint, but after you've raced on that track for a week, you can't just redo and reconfigure it at will, as with legos. The advantage of using a lego track in my view is that I can tear the track down and re-make it, or refine it, or after I make it and see one of the turns is too tight, the walls to narrow, etc, I can fix those things. With other track materials, I don't see being able to do that. And by the way, before we started using LEGO tracks, I made about five other tracks out of cardboard, particle board, poster board, zipzap tracks, etc. Its just that for my group that races every week, the same track week in and week out would be boring. So with LEGO's for no additional cost I can have a new track every week. Might not be the way to go for everyone, but we like it.

That is pretty coo, but aren't the lanes a little small in width?! And how long are their lengths, for each piece?
