M24 Mid Tripmate with a Mini-Z motor mount

Here are a couple of pictures of my M24 Mid with a Mini-Z motor mount. I found out the motor mount lines up perfectly using the Mid's suspension plate. The only thing that must be done is add an extra hole -- better yet, make a shorter plate using CF as I think the Mid's plate is too long for this setup. Or make them like o-plates and call them donut plates Using the Z motor mount is great because I get to use my Mini-Z wheels, diff, and motors while taking advantage of the Mid's superior steering mechanism and ability to use electronics of my choice. The front will accept Mini-Z wheels without modification.

LOL!!! Do you have a pic with all four Mini-Z wheels and a shell mounted? How did you mount the rear shock to the mount?

Nice, but

the one advantageous feature of the Kawada you DONT get now is the MIDSHIP MOTOR...

Not to mention the fact that the Kawada has a Mabuchi FK130SZ, which also is sold by GPM as MZ038/39. (Albeit possibly with a different number of turns)

Ted, this is a very good point, the midship motor is a great contributing factor to the MID's handling. The motor isn't as much of a concern, as you can cram some serious power into the 130 can. However, you would also lose the adjustable mesh that the Kawada gives, and also the ability to use that giant 20T pinion.

The Mabuchi FK130SZ or MZ038/39 doesn't quite compare to a Mini-Zracer.com motor or NML motor from what I've read. I could get run over using that stock motor or MZ038/39 where I race... My NML and MZ is coming...can't wait

ERRR...

The GPM MZ038/39 IS a Mabuchi FK130SZ. Albeit different versions of it.
And the Mini-z stock (and x-speed and their likes) is a Mabuchi FA130. (or was it FK130...?)

The main difference between the 130 and the 130SZ is 20 degrees timing advance. Which is useful if you want to make a faster motor. In terms of equal innards (wire gauge & nr of windings) the SZ will have the legs on it's lesser brother.

Another useful feature on the SZ is the two tapped screw-holes, like on it's big brother the FK180SH (or sometimes known as M&Y180, or Tamtech-motor). Makes meshing cogs a joy. But a handy DIY'er can make those at home with a bench-drill...

...never said they were the FAs and the FKs were the same. I'm just saying that racing in Connecticut Speedway (www.connecticutspeedway.com) will get me nowhere. I get better results with an X-Speed than with my GPM motor (definitely better than the FK130SZ that comes with the kit). If the MZR and NML performs better than an X-Speed then...

Anyway, back to the original topic. It turns out you can use the stock Mini-Z suspension plate with the M-24 Mid and a GPM motor mount. Just put it on backwards and the holes line up evenly. The only downside is it covers the on/off switch. This shouldn't be a problem with most cars since the on/off switch is mounted topside.

Regarding using Mini-Z front wheels, I stand corrected. No modification is needed if you are not using CLK rims. I had to replace the stock shafts with shafts from broken Mini-Z steering knuckles to use CLK rims which wasn't very hard to do.

Regarding the damper, I just installed the motor clip the other way on the GPM mount so that the hole where I plan to screw in a ball joint is on top. This way, I can use my Mini-Z damper. Alternatively, you can make an adapter using maybe a strip of aluminum to connect the other end of the stock damper.

If you noticed, all these modifications can be done without having to make your own parts. I'm doing this to be able to use hop-up parts I already have.

How does this hybride handle, compared to how it handled before you started modifying the rear end? Surely the top speed & accelleration has improved, courtecy of more ooomphy motors, but how does the thing perform on a track ?

Curious.

Why don't you use micro stock motor since it will fit without modification as donut mentioned on other posts. It should be faster than MID stock.
