On all my Bits/MS's there is either a black or white coating (sparse, but there) on the return lines from my steering coils. This is done most likely to distinguish the 2 wires...
just my thoughts.

cincinnati ohio, and its not on all four but its on two of them. it doesnt look like its intentional. i dont get it. its a pretty big mess in there. i wanna get my hands on a solder gun and re wire. theres alot jumbled up that i think can be straitened out to make it easier in the future to work on. i really dont understand why this stuff is on here though. hmmmmmmmmmm
if i find a thicker gause wire can i use that for the steering wirers????? these look so brittle im afraid ill break them. and is this just copper wire????

I've seen this on one of mine as well. This could be similar to the black wire corrosion that destroys R/C battery packs. I hope not, because I haven't heard of a cure other than removing the offending wire :/

The corrosion could be caused by how the bits are shipped in from China. My company ships many things from China and i have seen corrosion due the salt in the air when shipped sea.

Larger wires won't necessarily do any good, the magnetic field generated by the coils is dependent on the current from the system, so if you push more current the field will be stronger but then you have to figure out what these tiny wires are rated to handle too.
It would be Sad/Hilarious to go through the work of bumping up the current through the wires only to burn the shellac off of them and start a car fire.
problem is the strength of the magnetic field also depends greatly on how many coils of wire are present/the proximity of those coils to one another/the diameter of the coils, etc.etc.etc.
your safest bet would probably be to remove the affected portion of the wires as they probably ARE corroded due to poor quality control (i.e. the shellac on the wire is to thin to prevent the oxidation of the wire) and then solder some 28-26awg stranded/insulated wire from the coil to the PCB
good luck
