Transmitter Board Revisions and Cripple Caps

First off Hello to everyone here. I hope im posting in the correct area. I own two Bits both Limited Edition Skylines which is where my problem stems from.

My first bit was the Xanavi Skyline. Sweet little car and my first mod was removal of the cripple cap in the TX. Very easy to find, simple to do and noticable improvement in range.

Well seeing how this bit totally squashed the two Bullet racers i was given as a gift i had to have another. So i bought the Zexel Limited Edition Skyline. I figured for just under $40 and the ability to get them local, what the heck. Well so i go to pop the TX open on the Zexel and guess what? I cant find the cripple cap.

Looked and Looked no luck. The Zexel appears to have a Rev5 board in the TX while the Xanavi has a Rev4 board in it. They are clearly different.

So my question is, wheres the cripple cap on the Rev 5 board?

Im going to try to post pics of both boards and what i think may be the cripple cap on the Rev 5(Zexel).

Thanks for the space, great forums!

REV 5 Pics. Sorry these are so crappy. Good Camera has disappeared.

First pic is entire board, Second pic is a clip of the big pic where i think the crip cap is located. Its hard to see but its the verticle orange cap. This is my ASSumption. I dont know for sure thats why im asking in the first place.

that looks like it may be it - just make sure you have your soldering iron handy and make sure you take note of which end is positive and negative before you snip it in case it's wrong - that way you can re-attach it, if need be. It's coming off of the antenna circuit it seems, so it would make sense that it make be crippling your signal.

Sorry, but I can't tell from your pic. Try getting another angle of that area you circled as well as the bottom right area. They look different, but I can't tell without better angles, and better close ups? Can you find the macro function for your camera? It may look like a flower.

My boy has a sweet digi cam i will try to snag them tonight if not tomorrow.

I can verify that the board are different in the TX between my two SE skylines. The Pennzoil Zexel having the latest being revision 5, the Xanavi has Revision 4 in the TX.

H82lose91, C-11 does look suspicious. That capacitor does not exist in my Rev 4 board, but all the surround electronics look the same. Since that's the only one near the antenna, that's probably a good guess to where the new cripple capacitor may be. If you can desolder to remove the cap and check, that would be great! I don't think it'll ruin anything, but make sure you keep the cap around so you can put it back if need be.

hey guys, i am new here. soldered off c11, and...i conform a range increase from 8 ft to exactly 19 ft by removing the c11 capacitor on version 5. this is with the on car cripple cap removed also. no antenna mods either.

good call on the capacitor!
someone else give it a whirl.

EDIT: i shouldnt have tested it in 2 different rooms. i am not so sure now. but the controller works great with the cap gone
