Snake Mod, you are right to have doubts because it is no easy task for sure.
You go and work on those U-joints (I know they are tiny) and I'll go make my U-joints this week .
I think my U-joint plan is simple and it should work well but the independant suspension is going to kill me-LOL.
That ZZse servo cant be made small enough for me so I'll have to do something about it.
I may try to just use a tiny very small machine screw and have the motor spin that and move the nut back and forth for steering thro.
Then have the pot on the other end, but how to get it calibrated just right, Hmmm.(just an idea right now)

I'm kinda suprised nobody is trying to go for a belt-drive pan-car yet.

Yesterday I had to pick up one of my SE's and strip the chassis a little to see just how much of a problem AWD will be, and I realize this holy grail of micro rc is definately possible, but you guys REALLY have your work cut out for you.
Please don't give up on this task. The world has been needing someone to build this since 2002 when the Bits and Zips were brought into the world.

I've been here Snake, just haven't had that much to reply to. Seems like I didn't see any of your posts here for a while either, your MW's still doing ok?

Little something from the BitPimps. Base model instead of an SE, but still it's an AWD in progress...

Looks like brass stock and slotcar parts.

He's coming along nicely on his.
The hardest part is the steering.
I hope to be in this years BitPimps contest with atleast two entries.

Here's where I stand at the moment. Still designing, and collecting pieces.
Here's some pics
Just an over head shot of all the materials in on this build up. Lots to work with.

I may have to come up with a totally new steering servo setup just to fit into the car.The stock SE servo takes up to much room.

That's what I've been thinking, but the pot and motor still take up some space. I don't know what to do about that part yet. Still assembling though.

I'm thinking of using the servo motor, and the first gear it touches turning a tiny threaded rod with a nut that actually moves the wheels and ditch the rotary POT and use a slide POT that is keyed to the nut.
The idea is to spin the threaded rod and have the nut move back and forth.
The nut would most likely have to be made since I think it would need a guide rod to keep it from spinning and the slide POT could lay right next to all this.
I would have to make a bracket to hold it all.
I havnt even mentioned how I plan to connect to the tierods.LOL
Or maybe just a compact worm gear setup and use the stock motor and POT.
These are all just distant idea's right now though.

nice looking set up, are those the stock SE knuckles? are you going to use the stock SE chassis? may i suggest mounting the servo on the chassis like how it is on the ZZMT because the little servo is probably strong enough to pivot the knuckles from an altered angle. thats the body i wanted for my basher actually.....might buy it off ebay along with the ram.
are any of you using the awd gears from the ZZMT like me? i feel like im the only one using them, and the seem too bulky...what slot car can i use??
today im gona go hunting for some cheap pullbacks and slot cars...any suggestions on a specific one?
also, i found what i wanted to build with the hummer
check it out:
http://www.hobbytron.com/NKOC8642.html
pretty much what i wanted, im just going to give the hummer a suspension, awd and extra torque. just to fool around with.
im still going forth with the chevy though, i will try to find this little hummer today, maybe kb toys??
the little boat trailer, charger and hummer combo is what i wanted to build, but i guess i will buy it and mod it.
all my work will probably be postoned till november because i am getting a new work bench and getting some new tools to use around this month, so as soon as i set it up ill finish up.............

RCdabbler--
I enjoy reading of your imaginations. May I, please, ask several questions?
Why use a potentiometer (POT) at all? Let the driver be responsible for total control of the steering. If you steer left, then you'd also need to steer right to correct back to center, and vise versa.
How do you intend to orient the steering servo you design? Will you have to change direction of mechanical motion? I like your idea of a jack screw. Have you considered using a bell crank? You could gain some mechanical advantage with the crank, depending on the length of the two arms.
If you're looking for really small machine screws, check at a model railroad shop for the Walthers hex head brass screws and nuts. The hex head could offer several ingenious ways of attaching to a servo output (I use RC airplane fuel line--its flexibility as it turns means the jack screw is less likely to bind). The brass nuts, with some careful soldering, could be fastened to the end of a brass tube. The other end of the tube could be flattened and drilled to accept a link to the steering mechanism. I'm thinking screws of 0-80 thread size.
I hope you can provide some clear and detailed pictures of your effort--even if it doesn't work (though I really hope it does). Documenting your prototype would give us a chance to see what does and does not work, engage our lazy minds, and perhaps offer some helpful suggestions.
Thanks.
