how to check speed
hey i remeber reading this somewhere on this site but i cant seem to find it now
i was wondering how i would go about in checking the speed of my xmod without a speed checker.
it was some method of laying down two points which had some releavnce to the scale of the xmod (1/24th)
if anyone knows how help would be appreciated

Relevance to the scale only matters if you want scale speeds.
All you need is D=RT. Distance=Rate*Time
If you know how far apart two points are (tape measure), and you know how long it takes the car to travel that distance (stop watch) you can solve for the rate using really basic algebra (calculator).
With a little more math you can change feet per second to miles per hour, or what ever flavor you like your data.

Go to Google and in the search field type "Convert 1 mile to inches" and see what happens.

really simple....
1 foot = 12 inches.
1 mile = 5280 feet.
1 minute - 60 seconds.
1 hour = 60 minutes.
If your car goes a distance of 3 feet in 1 second for example, in one minute your car would go (3x60 = 180) feet. Multiply 180 feet by 60 minutes and you have 10800 feet per hour, which, divided by 5280 feet in a mile is 2.045 miles per hour.
This is not exactly the most accurate way of measuring speed, but it is a good approximation without a radar gun.

I have my students do it both ways. Radar and d/t. For the d/t (Distance/time) method its important to start the car and get it up to speed before the measured distance starts. Otherwise you won't get a top speed.

Yeah, that's an important caveat. D=RT will give you the average speed over the distance, no the top or instantaneous speed of the car, which would be better done with a radar gun or dyno or such.

Right now Hot Wheels has a radar unit for $22. I'd look into it.

1 mile= 63,360 inches. if you wanna get that to 1/24th scale then just dived 63,360 by 24. 63,360/24=2640 inches. that is to scale.
