by having it submerged in water, but not touching anything, should it be touching the bottom/sides of the container of water?
i just wire it up to a battery pack that is high and dry, correct?

i did a complete "how to" on this subject on another site. anyone want the link? i don't recommend using wd-40. it will eventually gum up.and slow the motor down. i recommend using compressed air,or motor spray to dry the motor. the wd-40 is also responsible for some of the increase in rpm. it is actually lubricating the comm/brush area. if you run in a dirty/dusty area, your motor will turn into a dust bunny using wd-40. i like to use either mobil1 synthetic oil,or prolong lube in the needle applicator on the bushings (motor bushings) only. any lube on the comm, and it gets dirty quick. you want the comm/brush contact area as clean as possible.

after running my xmod for a while, I've noticed black gunk starting to show up on the gears. an ideas on how to clean them?
also- is there any need to re-oil the drive shaft after taking it out? if so, how?

you should never need to oil the driveshaft.to clean the gears, just use an old toothbrush that you don't use on your teeth anymore.be sure to take the gears out of the car first.
