well what i did to find the motor with the most torque is put the motor in a regular ZZ and held it in my hand and see how much pressure i could put on it before the motor would stall. the 3rd gear would be really nice but it looks pretty hard to do.

yea it looks hard but probally worth it because it would also save some of your battery power which means longer runtimes. Would u do the mod 2 ur truck ill think about it more if i want to do it.

The purpose of the zip zap motor mod to the steering is to give more torque to the steering, and decrease the turning radius right?

Would the increased voltage from a tri cell conversion give more torque to the steering motor to overcome poor steering?

yes, it gives more torque to the stearing, no, it does not decrease the turning radius.

I always thought that the whole idea behind swapping out the motors was to throw the wheels harder for rock crawling.
EDIT
I put a red ZZ motor on my Tri-Cell, but it also kills tha batts faster.
END EDIT
I've only seem a couple of references to the additional gear mod for the steering, but I haven't seen detailed instructions for it.
(If I find em, I'll post a link and will for sure be attempting it myself!!)
I noticed the additional battery drain when running upgraded steering motors too, and addressed it by adding an entire second battery pack from another MT when I built Project: XL1 .
I wired the second battery pack in parallel to double the capacity (running time), as opposed to the more common series wiring that gives hellacious speed.
