Extended Axels?
Okay, i've been working on this rally project on and off for a long time now and i keep on running into the same problem. I have custom knuckles and a-arms cut and ready. I have the steering worked out, everything is working, but... i can't get the power to the wheels. I've been trying to work out a way to do it on my own (i actually hate having to ask for help, this project is my baby) but i keep hitting the same dead end.
what i've tried so far: i've made a set of front awd axel shafts, fully articulated, but when i installed them, there was no way for them to stay in place. there is some fundamental difference between my design and RS's design that does'nt allow me to treat the axels the same way...or something.
i've also tried using the original axels, then putting a bit of plastic tubing on the end to extend as far as the wheel. that was bd, the joint on the old axels and the extesion was too weak and just fell apart.
the only thing i can think of is to get some metal or plastic shafts that have high torsion strength but low rigidity, so they will flex enough to allow steering, but won't warp when put in high-torque situations.
I know it can be done, i just cant figureit out. I saw that sawhit did something like it, and someone else did it a long time ago, just can't find the thread. I have also seen pics of japanese cars that have a crazy suspension and about 2 inches of ride height. i'll settle for .75 inches.
sorry for the long post, but i'm so close i can taste it, and really want an answer.
