I think that all depends on your style...some people just go at an obstacle as fast as they can, hit it, and hope for the best. Others prefer a more controlled approach, and would rather creep their way up and over what ever it is.
With little trucks, it doesn't much matter, hitting something at high speed doesn't usually break anything, so it's pretty much up to you.
Personally, I think the lower you're geared the better. Somebody calculated my custom gearing somewheres at 250:1. I'll probably go lower still. I like to creep, but that's only because my track has mountains and boulders to climb over, going fast there puts the dirty side up in a hurry, not to mention it's a small track, so there's really not room to fly around it even if you could stay right side up.
With stock gearing, your choices are pretty much fast, or faster. If you don't plan to mod the gear box, you might as well drop in the red stuff and go nuts. The other choices are pretty much too fast for the rough stuff, too slow for any wheelly poppin, air catchin, carpet eatin racin.
Experiment and have fun. That's why these things have swappable parts. Just play.
