33.5 Feet Indoor range!
For all you naysayers who claim how bad Zips range are, and how bad 27 mhz range is, I just measured with a yard stick 33.5 feet indoors with my 27 mhz Zip, all ive done was untie the antenna. Nothing to the controller, and same original antenna wire ; ) I might go take a video to prove it lol Zip Zaps rule! lol

You're right! I've been lying this whole time.
My stock ZZ 27Mhz didn't just get 6ft indoors like I've been saying.
It has really been getting 3 miles indoors, I just measured!
Mwuaahahhaha!
Glad your's worked for you. But there are still plenty of us with less than stellar results on stock 27Mhz. And for those a few mods are necessary to get a decent amount of range out of them...

Notice you said to ALL the naysayers which there are a lot of (me being one).
Still I'm glad you get that range, I really wish mine would have gone more than 5 feet.
I will probabally buy a new Zip when more people start chiming in that they get a decent range with no mods.
Untill the I'm sticking with Micros and Bit Chars

I only replaced the antenna and I get 100+ feet outside and up to 50 feet inside (depending on interference etc)
I know I'm a stud :-)

I agree that the range on the 27mhz cars pretty much sucks. It seems that most RCs have shorter ranges with this frequency. Besides removing the knot from the antenna what can one do easily to improve this?

replacing the antenna seriously isn't that hard. Mine is a 27mhz. Just find a long thin wire. I have a solid core wire that is about a 32 guage and it is a foot and a half long. I just resoldered this in place of the the other. If you don't want to solder anything you can just tie it to the stock one (but you'll have to stip the stock one so that the metal touches). It will get better results if replacing the stock one, but any length increase helps, as well as the travelling medium for the signal (Copper, aluminum, gold, etc).

i have to echo this... just took my 27MHz carriage apart and undid the knot... it works! much improved range... didn't measure it, but the dead spot where the car would sputter is no longer there....
another thing that may affect the coverage is that wireless signals are not truly spherical and not totally omni-directional...
i'm quite pleased and recommend this simple approach (as it doesn't cost anything)...
thanks!

I just unknotted the antenna on my 27Mhz ZZ. I probably won't be able to tell any difference racing tonight because Latency's track is only 8' long and I stand at the middle of one side or the other. But I should definitely be able to tell once I get it home. Both my cars start to sputter and die when I am standing at one end of my kitchen and the car is at the other (about 15'). Hopefully the 27 will now be able to turn around at the end without me leaning forward or moving toward the car. If it does, I may make the mod on my 49 as well.
I may end up also replacing the controller antennas with longer ones as well, as I have heard that significantly improves range.

Yep no joke I got the 17 3/4 one from RS and it helped a lot. I didnt even have to grind it to fit. I did sandpaper some to get a good contact. ALso added some solder for good measure.

I know it far out but with these basic antenna one thing that helps is to hold the controllers antenna verticle. or if you bend the antenna back horz then hold the antenna horz.
I guess a small beam antenna could be designed so it forces most of the signal in one direction.
