Everybody has their own motivations. I crave performance above all else. BC enjoys doing custom paint. NML enjoys building motors. Some people race. Some people build show cars. Some build "dyno queens". You do whatever pleases you with this hobby.

Demolition derby
hehe... nah.
I have 2 cars and 3 bodies.
1. Nissan Skyline GTR34 built to handle on a small/medium track.
- It has a beater body with lots of damage that it gets raced with.
- It has a show body thats been painted and has the wing holes filled(wings are grotesque).
2. VW GTI MK1 which will be built to drag - currently just has a stock chasis.

I think they look much cleaner without
Only reason any of these cars should have a wing is if they are trying to mimic the looks of a touring car(which need the extra downforce).
Streetcars don't need wings.

Unfortunately, fashion sense and common sense don’t find themselves in the same room often.
The real reason people put ugly wings on their cars is for looks. Simple as that. Any street racer that tells you he gets a performance improvement out of it is lying. They can try to hide behind logic, saying that they have a marked performance in traction, but it’s not necessary on a street car!
Especially on the x-mods, wings weigh down the model. You are better off taking it off and filling the holes. Even if aerodynamics did matter on that car, you can bet your money that the wing doesn’t act like a real wing. It’s a plastic mock-up, no more. No performance value whatsoever. Any way, its not necessary.
Getting back on topic…
I would race my car, but it’s too darn cold and snowy!!! The best courses around here are the parking lots.
However, my car isn’t up to par yet to compete with the mini Z or other mini cars. I still need to install the Teflon sealed ball bearings, aluminum drive shaft, carbon fiber H plate, Team Losi 180 sized motor, and competition grade wheels and tires. Maybe it’s good that its not warm outside, or I would get owned on the track.

Dude, everything on a plastic car is a plastic mock up... Actually, the body also has no performance value but weighing the car down...

How much does the model wing wiegh down the car?
About 5 grams including the metal screws you use to install it.
Will you get negative performance from leaving it on?
A car that is without a wing will weigh less than one with a wing. So, YES, it does have a negative performance.

Yeah, but you need to have a little protection or you are going to damage the components eventually... by impact or dirt.
I'm aware of the weight of the body.
Try looking at some of the 1/24 lexan bodies that ABC hobby has. They have some nice cars... Supras... Skylines... Turenos...RX7... MR2...

Lightweight and flexible.

There isn't much metal in the screws. Most of the weight is in the wing itself. I imagine that each screw weighs about 0.3 to 0.6 grams. So the weight of the wing is around 3.8 grams.

Whether they make a difference or not, and I hope people realize they do nothing... IMO, they still look like trash, on street cars, on RC cars, whatever.
We all have our own opinions though
Schr-eng - You may want to look into a CF driveshaft instead of aluminum. It would be lighter and just as strong. $10 for a set of 3, one for each chasis length adjustment.

wings do help. not on the straights, but in a turn the extra downforce in the rear is slightly helpful, but not until at lest 45 mph. however the most important thing that is usualy overlooked by all these street "racers" is a front spoiler, usualy built in to the airdam/bumper cover. those little black "wings" (like on the acura body kit) are also helpful.
but on a 28th scale rc car the entire body is nothing but whieght.
if u dont belive me run ur car w/o the body. i recomend doing this inside

Exactly the reason why street cars do not need them.
Glad you made a point about how they don't help in straights, becuase it is a common myth that they help in the quarter mile.
If you don't belive me, play Gran Turismo 3 on your PS2 and test run a car with full downforce and zero downforce. I hate using GT3 as a refrence, but it is a "real driving simulator." I trust that the developers knew what they were doing.

Also a good point, because a rear spoiler puts most of its downforce on the rear of the chasis. Putting them in the front helps establish a 50/50 balance of downforce, front and rear.
