radio gear?

Hi my name is Lee I've been lurking for over a year, some amazing stuff you all are building. just got an area where I can do some building so i've ordered the man 7.5t and am going to try a 6x6 first, and I was just wondering what kind of radio gear would be good, right now I have nothing, so I was thinking about one of the packages with rx tx and servos, just mainly wondering if most radio gear is just pieced together or bought as a kit to start with?

They are normally pieced together using sub micro equipment.

I was thinking a full system I was looking at the Laser 4M Micro Systems from hitec it has the hs-55 servos but I don't know if they'd be small enough. any suggestions would be great thanks again

Here's a question for you, since this forum seems geared more toward scratch-building, rather than kitbashing......

I'm looking at making an on-road Semi in a rather small scale, rather than the off-road trucks you're all working with. And when I say 'Small scale', I mean roughly to scale with the Zipzaps cars that are also on these forums.

Because it's going to be this small, I'm looking at putting the batteries, reciever, and ESC inside the 'Belly pack' of a car carrier trailer, then route the servo cables and motor power lines like brake hoses into the cab; So the cab would only contain a steering servo and the motor.

But, if I'm going to be putting the work into it, I was thinking I might as well go for a three-channel radio, and use the third channel for a second servo to lift/lower the ramp and top deck of the trailer.

What I'm wondering is, are these radios (And all the other equipment you linked to) small enough to fit inside that kind of space? I'm thinking roughly 1"x2"x8".

Also, I've heard a lot of praise about brushless motors, some people claiming that they don't need any sort of ESC to run properly. Is this true, and would it offer enough power to be a feasable option? If it is, the ESC is a bulky piece I'd like to get rid of.

Whoever said that you don't need an ESC is lying. It controls your speed, so of course you need it. And a brushless motor needs a certain type of ESC, so look out for that. But, you don't need a brushless setup for these trucks, they are just too small. And plus, I don't think you would want your truck that you custom built go crashing into a wall because you were driving it at 20mph!

The radio equipment will easily fit in 1x2x8 area.

The zipzap are actually a bigger scale than these trucks. TTTT's are 1/87, zz's are 1/64.

On the Brushless Motors topic, though, I think I wasn't wording it correctly... I was under the impression that a brushless motor had the ESC incorporated into the attached PCB, and wouldn't require a seperate ESC. I've only worked with fairly hefty ESCs before, but they were for racing gear, this is the first time I've played with the idea of Tabletop Trucking.

I do believe all brushless motors have esc's, and sometimes they are bigger than normal brushed motor esc's. I think your best bet is to rip apart a micro servo and use it as an esc for a pager motor (brushed).
