you drift FWD cars in real life using weight transfer techniques to induce oversteer. These methods include lift-off, braking, and downshifting. The center of gravity of the car being several inches (sometimes more than a foot) above ground level means that there is leverage forcing the front wheels down harder and the rear of the car gets lighter. The rears lose traction while the fronts gain more traction. Some night when you're on a dark road with no traffic, watch your headlights dive to the ground while you slam on the brakes or downshift. Watch them point upward when you accellerate. This is weight transfer. The lights pointing up when accellerating is because the rear wheels get more traction as the car rocks backwards. This is why rear wheel drive cars usually "hook up" better at a drag strip, as well. Anyways, when this front-heavy weight transfer happens while cornering, the rear wheels can slide laterally much easier while the steering wheels get more control. That's Oversteer. Used properly, you can drift a car, FWD, AWD, or RWD.
You can also execute a "flick" maneuver where you pull a quick jab left, then hard right, or vise versa, when cornering. This works alone, but works better when used in combination with a weight transfer.
last but not least, you can do it like a ricer and pull your emergency brake to lock the rear wheels (which isn't really drifting)
The difference between FWD and RWD/AWD in drifting is that FWDers need to use weight transfer to get the rear wheels to lose traction, whereas an RWD or AWD car can just use a gross excess of horsepower to break the rears free.

I applaud you, good explanation.
By the way, the "flick" is also called a "feint" drift or the "scandinavian flick" (not a good thing when a bicyclist hidden behind a bush is in your apex)
True, that isn't drifting, however, some professionals do it to unhinge the rears when understeer comes in, but a brake-bias-valve helps in that situation.
Edit: If any BMW fans read this thread, we got paid a visit today by a 21 year old guy with an E30 M3. He noticed my brother's 325i with the numbers from the last AutoX on it so he pulled into our street, and they talked cars for a while, then we went for a ride in the M3. He has a 2.5L in it and Eibach suspension, Racing Dynamics strut bar, Apex Motorsports spark-plug wires, and Parada Spec 2 tires. Let me tell you, the S14 loves to rev!

nope, Drifting is when you control the slide the whole way, and in the vids that ikinari has he is running hard fronts ans stock rears i think, but he didn't have anything on the wheels when he posted those vids like a couplw weeks ago.

nfsu is void. that game has nothing to do with real drifting.. i'd say do what you do in gran turismo 3 as thats the only close representation of drifting.. and a good one too. but these are xmods we're talking about. those vids, that kid used awd... in real life... you better have the holy spirit helping you if you want to awd drift on the street. xmods need their own technique to drift as they are not as complex (obviously) as real cars. just work the throttle and steering till you get it right.
i locked my dif. finally. that japanese guy has some unique mods i havent seen on these forums yet.. i wont mention them so you can see for yourself.

A drift is having the car side out to the end of the turn already facing exactly where the road is headed. In a powerslide, you'll have to correct all the way to the end of the turn, losing a little time straightening out where the corner empties out onto a straight.

Then it would be nice if they'd stop defining it.
It hardly counts.

What about the R32 Skyline? That's known as a drifter and its 4WD I believe.

there is a r34 skyline(Ken Nomura) that was in the d-1 grand prix of drifting on the west coast this past year, but it was converted to rwd. there is also an r32 in the d-1 driven by Yuuki Izumida and that too is rwd.

I was under the impression that 'drifting' was originally inspired by the way rally cars moved. And they're almost always AWD.
Or did I just assume that, and the rallies are totally separate?
