Pinon gears.
I am a newbie trying to learn the techie stuff.
I have acquired several minis, some clones(?). I have noticed that three of the units I have have white, 10(ten) tooth pinon gears, the rest of the gears on each unit are also white. The name on the trans. is 'Bensii'. The other units I have are a 'Bit" and a MicroSizzler, +, they all have either green, 6(six) tooth pino gears or 6(six) tooth, black pinon gears, the axels have colored gears signifying there ratio.
What is, if there is a significance, of the colors? Please help.

I'm with ^
There are 3 different gears on the bits, which is which?
What gears is fast for 4.2 stock?

Don't pay too much attention to the color. Clones, bits, zip zaps and even the new super bits use different color coding.
There are three main gear ratios:
8:1 = good top end speed with lower torque
9:1 = a little slower, but a little more torque
12:1 = great torque, but low top end speed
There are other gear ratios that are not so common, like a 3:1. I think zip-zaps have another also.
There really is no "best" gear ratio. It all depends on what you want and what you are doing. For example if you are racing on a very tight course, then I would go with higher torque. Also, the weight of the car. The heavier the car, the more torque you may need to get it going.
Judging by the ratios, you may think that the 3:1 would be the fastest top end, but there aren't any bit RC cars that I know of that produce enough energy to get it moving fast enough to reach it's top speed. In other words, all I've seen them do is start real slow and speed up very slowly, while never actually getting that fast. So that being said, if you have a fet modded car or a dual cell car that produces more volts/ma, then even a lower torque gear ratio will accelerate quickly.
I will say that I use mainly 8:1 and 9:1. They're really about the same, especially when you do things to increase the power going to the motor. Also, remember that the higher revolution motor you have the less torque it will have. So if you want a butt-load of torque from a stock car, then use a 12:1 with a 1.6. If you want more top end speed, then you could use a 8:1 with a 4.2. That's why you hear people prays the 2.6 motor. It gives you advantages over a 1.6 and a 4.2. I use 2.6~4.2's.

Where can I get all those gears? 9.1, 8.1, 12
I want a 8.1, but will a stock 4.2 get it up to speed?

i use a 7 tooth pinion with the reg transfer and axle gears, and a 2.6. i lose a little torque, but gain a lot of speed and control. just changing the pinion gear make s a big difference.

I know tomy has some tune up sets they sell. They have all three in two of their sets. There is a new one made for the super bits that looks good. It's got the same size tires as the super bits, and the rims are gold. It's like a lighter color gold than the original bits, and the rim design looks a lot better. I wish I could post a picture. You can check "toy east" and "hobby link japan". They might have them.
