even if it has a first gear, it wouldnt even work in second. it would just come to a dead stop ... if it IS 1:12. i think most of you people arent even factoring in the other gears in the tranny. like the green gear, or the weird one that changes directions of the movement(lkol im horrible with the actual terms). these things will never see over 20mph.. even that will take some serious modding. the fastest electric car, any rc car, was like 120 or so mph. just the gearing wont help it. in real cars, if you gear it too low the the engine winds out and overheats from no load(im not sure if this applies to electric motors too though). and if it is geared too high then it has too much of a load and will overheat and fry itself to death.

oh yeah, i think it would be more worthwhile to have the green gearset or red even for first, then get the kit racer gears. they are like 3.4 to 1 or something. i think that wouldnt work nicely.

depending on how much modding you've done to the car you might overheat the motor.
the fastest rc car was 180+ because the team associated people that built it couldnt find a long enough track for the car to top out.

Cool! Just when you make them post a tutorial. I hope you can make some like MicroAmps does FET mods for $
I just came up with an awesome idea! Use a FET modded booster with this mod! 4 speed!

Still sounds like a wicked project!! UPDATE!!!!
So is this thing gonna shift on the fly, or have a little gearshift that lets you choose the range then go drive?
I wouldn't go beyond the KitRacer gearing of like 3:1, as it'll probably struggle for even that. I don't care what motor you use, they don't have nearly enough torque to even manage a 1:1 ratio, let alone an overdrive of 12:1 like you'd mentioned. You've gotta keep it in the powerband.
You'll probably have more luck if you get like brass gears (watches, model trains...) instead of plastic gears; because they should let you build to tighter tolerance, have less slop, and have less friction at the bearing surfaces.
