LOL, Racer9 I just noticed that my track will be very similar to your avatar when the legs are attached.

DAMN NICE TRACK... as a long time lurker and, I believe, 1st time poster I'm very impressed!
I started playing around with ZZaps when they 1st came out and myself and the 8yr old had a blast with them. They got set on the shelf but we went to go see 2F2F when it came out and had a renewed interest in the cars again.
So much so that I got a TOMY Disney Bus from HK and have several other eBay Auctions I'm waiting on... but the best thing is I'm building a track for my son and I to play on! Built the frame yesterday, finished the last four screws this morning now I need some smaller screws to attach the 3/4" plywood top to the 4'x8' frame (Another trip to Home Depot... darn ).
Then it's time to figure out the track plan, I'm thinking a big oval that would also have a figure 8 made out of it (Over under of course... with jump by removing the bridge) and some side passages that could be pits or just another/different race route.
Now for a question, I was thinking 6" wide lanes all the way around but your using 9"s and it looks good... I want the most bang for the 4'x8' but I don't want it to be 1) No fun because your always running into walls and 2) I want to have room to scenic the layout as well... water, mountains... believe it or now I was thinking helepad as well because there are supposed to be some TinyRC Copters at some point that I read about a while back... PHEW!
I was going to take PICs of the construction of the frame but I figured there were other places to see that stuff. I built the frame based on information taken from the Construction section of HO Slot Car Racing... some good info there. BUT I'll try and take PICs as I start to scenic it.
Later,
AP

You are exactly where I was a few months ago. I had exactly the same questions and aspirations. I designed my track on a sheet of paper 6 times. I finally settled on design number 3 in the series. I laid a 1/2"=1/2' grid out on each sheet of paper so I could keep the scaling up accurate. I did one design using 6" lanes and it netted me almost twice as much track length, but I'm glad I went with 9" as 6 would be to tight on a technical course. 9" seems the best width to use for driving enjoyment verses getting the most track out of your board. It's still difficult enough to stay interesting, but not so much you can't navigate it without bouncing from barrier to barrier. And, like you I wanted some landscaped areas. I sacrificed a few feet of track to keep some space for larger landscaping projects as well, but I'm glad I did. I built the helipad because I plan to try to build a micro heli conversion from a Zip. I haven't made any progress on that and don't know if I will if some company beats me to it so I can just buy one. Most of the fun of building this thing is still coming as I am going to enjoy lighting the track most of all. I have lots of ideas for that sort of eye candy. But, that part runs into more money for parts and I have to ease that stuff past the ole lady. Good luck with your track! I know it's one of my favorite parts of the hobby.

Thanks for the quick reply... I'm not really trying to get the most feet of track length - just the most fun for myself and the 8yr old . So I guess I'll go back and see what I can do with 9" wide lanes...
I was also thinking about lighting the track so that we could have some "night races". I was thinking about using white or a very light blue LED as well as a UV LED. The UV LEDs would work with this neon paint that I found at CoolerGuys (Yeah, I MOD PCs and Xboxs as well ). I was thinking that I could trim the cars with this paint and it would only show up with a UV light source...
Anywho, just got back from the store getting my #8 2.5" screws to attach the 4'x8' to the frame so I'm off like a mad man...

1.How Smooth do the cars run on it.
Very smooth. Good grip with just a little slip. After some paractice you can lap the track like a pro without hitting any barriers. You have to watch the speed and set the cars up right.
2.What car(s) do u have
I have some Zips, a MW clone, and two of the AwesomeRC cars.
3. Do u have any T.T.T.T if so witch ones?
No, but plan to dabble in it a bit when I can afford the parts.
And fianlly great job on that track!
Thanks.
P.S.id u put the LEDs in?
Not sure what your asking. LEDs in where?

Re: how many?
I'd say 10 inches will work out very well. Wider is always better than to thin. As to light spacing, I would just measure out the lights about 18 inches apart or so and this will tell you how many you need. If your trach runs parallel to itself as mine does in places you could put dual light posts in those locations to illuminate both sides. Good luck and post us some picks when you are ready.

thx,but..........
will a single led be okay for use as one street lamp?
or will i require more light such as bulbs?
could i get away with just using 1 or 2 led's per lamp?

A super brite white LED will do fine at one per lamp post. Some of the super brite LEDs are much brighter than incandescent bulbs and last much longer.
