I too had a gold civic that worked with all of the motors but the motors work so much better with the newer pcbs. I thought that I heard that maybe they were updating some of the pcbs in the civic/mustang cars. TypeZero, sounds to me like there was something wrong with your dual cell hook up. If you changed pcbs and got the same result, then the only thing that was constant throughout would be the batts.
