The new 'Cars' movie ZZ... Crippled

The new line of ZZs which were brought out with the Cars theme bodies, have a Cripple Resistor in series with the motor.

Removal of said resistor increases power, though probably hurts runtime a bit.

Unfasten Two screws at the aft edge of the PCB cover, One screw at the fwd center of the the PCB; lift that all out of the way. The resistor is located at the endbell side of the motor, between motor and battery.

Out of curiousity, do you know the rating on that resistor?

The report on BitPimps said it was a 5 ohm.

I'm trying to confirm that right now. My resistor seems to be a Yellow Violet Gold Gold, which I'm seeing as a 4.7 ohm with a 5%.

Yeah I know 4.7 ohms isn't the end of the world. But are you going to turn down knowlege of free power? Only takes about 5 minutes to remove, and if you've got a good hot iron, you don't even have to pull the motor pod apart to free the endbell contact you're soldering the motorwire back onto.

If you've got more than one of the Cars movie vehicles, give it a shot. If you don't like it, the resistor can go right back in there.

I agree with removing it, I was just curious. 5 ohms isn't a lot, but what is the resistance in the motor? Without knowing that, 5 ohms might be a big deal. If those two are even close in magnitude it will make a difference. But yeah, I say take it out. A little less battery time can be solved by a double charge.

Yeah, I've seen the limiting resister and read most of the replies about it. IMHO, I would leave it in. My first impression of the new chassis is that they are stupid fast to begin with. Keeping the thing off the rails on my track is almost impossible at stock speeds. No throttle control plus more speed usually equals loss of control. And, I would think runtimes would be seriously lessened.
But, if you mostly drag race...
I dabbled with dual celling when it was all the rage and found that the cooless of the extra power wore off quickly as I could only run the thing in large open areas of lenoleum. I mean, how many donuts and spin outs can you do until it gets old?
EDIT: On second thought, putting a variable reister in place of the limiting resister would allow you to dial in different power levels to suit your mood. I like that alot better than removing it altogether.

I have yet to buy one of these to know what they are like. I was hoping to see them go half off sometime soon. I have so many ZZ and bits that dual or tri celling some is fun. I have enough to leave stock or just change motors. My tri cell was stupid fast and all it would do was burnouts... it still impresses a lot of people though.

It is definitely nice to have enough to do both. I would be interested in seeing the difference with the resistor removed. It might not be a big enough change to warrant a variable resistor, unless you wanted to tone the speed down.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Maybe give it a range that goes from gen 1 snail speeds up to wide open and unrestricted. This way you can do lazy micro urban driving on your desktop, then dial up to ballz out floor burnouts.

I had wondered about the variable resistor. It looks like I may have to pick up another ZZ or two for some, uh, comparison testing. Yeah, that's it.

If you go with a bigger resistor, you could probably even up the field to run against even 1st gen ZZs. Might be fun to run your fastest chassis against the old slow ones
