Complete 1st mod, Cat5.....
After getting my 2 Micro Sizers yesterday, I decided to try the Cat5 antenna mod on a Bit clone (Micro R/C) for practice. Bought a new soldering iron and fine tip from RS. Completed mod and tested. Before mod my clone had a range of approx 20', after the mod I got a range of 30'+ indoors. Works great and I chose the white w/ blue stripe to match the paint job on the bimmer, looks great too! Though with this particular clone, the antenna exits out the rear of the PBC board so it needed no extending. Now with my other MS, ZZ, & Z-Cars, I relocated the antenna exit to the top middle of the windshield ala euro antenna location instead of the front fender. This looks real euro and gives me about 2-4ft extended range. Give it a try and see what I mean. Now when I do the Cat5 mod to these, I'll get even more range. I have an abundance of Cat5 cabling here at work that I'll be throwing out soon. Anyone interrested, please post or drop me a line.

(edging towards the door) Anyone who wants an antenna in: red green black or yellow Send me one dollar and I will mail it to you. One US Dollar per antenna. Antenna will be cut to fit a business size envelope Those wanting twisted styles may purchase two, sit on them and spin. |
would catagory 6 be better for this mod?
|
As long as the wire is easy to work with and supports itself without flopping.
That's what's important. |

DarkTari -
Some of us are trying to run legitimate businesses here. Do you mind? haha |
I've never bought cat5 wire in "bulk" before so I was extremely surprised when they charged me 5cents a foot. I bought 20 feet of it for $1 :p
|
You had to buy it?
Bummer. Dark Tari, don't give stuff away to these guys! They will never learn to scrounge if you do that. |
you can go to best buy or office max and get a 5foot lan cable for about 5bucks. you will have enough to do 1000 antennas.

Did I mention I've been a ham operator for 13 years? (N2NLQ) 73!
There ya go!
Or look for a place they are building a new home or office, and ask the foreman for a piece of scrap. Sound wacky? Try it, you'll be amazed at what you can get with a smile and a handshake. Heeeeym wait a minute, that's what you guys were doing to me! The difference is that there is no shipping or mailing charges, etc. I'm glad you guys got my meaning with the antenna offer. I was joking about selling them for a dollar each. I received about eight e-mails asking for antennas, and I thought it remarkable. QFM is selling 4 for a dollar, does that make them a better deal than mine? ;) Look, it doesn't HAVE to be cat 5 cable. It can be wires from a piece of phone cable, as long as it's solid core, and not huge like some older phone wire can be. (You'll know) I have stated before that I have about 13cm of antenna visible. That would be considered a little long to some people, but keep in mind that the more length you can get away with, the better it will receive, and keeping it straight and the transmitter antenna pointed up will make a big difference. Keeping both antennas oriented the same way is known as "Polarization". Fer instance: If one is vertical, and one horizontal, it results in a measurable amount of signal loss (measured in db) due to "cross-polarization" of the antennas. Antennas can be thought of the same way speakers in a sound system can. They can be made to resonate a specific frequencies, and the more efficient they are, the less work the system has to do, thus operating more better. |
