When I performed the 4-gear mod, I used a pin-vise drill stuck through the idler gear to get a feel for how everything would move as I tried different spots.

When I found a location that worked I dug in the drill to mark the spot, removed the gear and finished the job.

Is it tight when you don't have a motor on it and you turn the wheels?
I've mis-spaced motors before and it ran tight.

Graphite is the only thing I would use, and might help.

Nice pic! I like the Rottie.

joez2872--

Good work. You can see my tutorial on the mod and other gear arrangements on my website.

i got to say battery life has went down  unless my gear mesh is til to tight ,anyadvice ?????? thanks guys

What's happening with this mod is that the motor has to turn more times to turn the drive wheels, resulting in more power on the ground.

These MTs are obviously engineered out of the box for a balance of performance and running time based on the materials used.

Any changes that fall outside the known ones are going to have an effect somewhere.

I added another parallel-wired battery pack from a scrapped MT for more running time.

interestingly enough, mine has much longer runtimes. I'm not using a zzmt motor though, I use a motor out of a clone that is slightly bigger and has lots of torque.

Motors will draw the most current when under heavy load. It's true the motor has to turn more to move the truck, but in either gear setup, the motor would reach its peak rpm. In the 4 gear case, at peak rpm, the load would be less. If you're really working the load to crawl over things, then the battery life will go down.

Using a different motor will indeed change things, but at that point you can no longer draw a comparison in the same manner that we are.

The amount of load will always reduce the battery time no matter what the gearing is.

With the four-gear mod, the motor has to spin more times to move the truck the same distance, thus it's running for a longer time regardless of the amount of load.

The tradeoff is that the load on the motor is reduced but it has to spin more to get the job done.

The classic engineering trade-offs.
You simply don't get something for nothing.

For mine, i used small strips of ZZ packaging to raise the motor up enough so that the gears don't bind. It works pretty well........

hey lord helmet. did you ever try to fit a dime or penny in those wheels when spun around like that?
fit almost perfect it's funny as hell
