I bought a Torino. It has 01A04 on the bottom of the package. I got it on sale at RS a few months ago for $14.99.
I believe it was from the second series of SEs which had the bodies that hid the mounting tabs.
I think the body looks really good. It could ride a little lower on the chasis, but still looks good.
The propo steering is much better than the earlier SEs. I counted 6/6 left and right. Unfortunately, it still suffers from the 'jittery' steering problem that has plagued the SEs from the beginning. But it doesn't affect the way it handles. I have a blue GTO Judge with the same symptom, but it will suddenly jerk to the left while I am using it. This is a little annoying.
I am glad the Torino doesn't do this.
The speed is good. I have the red perfomance motor with the green gears in it right now. This seems to be the best set up for my track.
I have put the purple NOS motor in it with the red gears. It smoked my Audi TT with the same set up.

I would say if you can find one of these on sale at RS pick it up. BUT, if you have the cash, definately pick up one of the newer SEs. I just got an Orange Mustang Mach 1. 09A04 on the bottom of the package. This thing screams! It is way better than any of the SEs in my collection. It is so much faster than my Torino, GTO, and TT. The steering is 7/7 right and left. AND no jittering!!

I hope this helps you.....

carpet the whole time. the second two it was running on regular carpet. The first one was in my basement (why it was so dark) which has industrial carpet that is very low resistance but high traction so the car flys.

Why, does it matter? I always drive it on carpet.

I had an Rx-7 from the same genration and it was really slow too. I could barely drive on carpet. It was really disappointing.
