Long Wheelbase Zipzaps

A couple of questions for those of you who have done it;

Where did you cut the chassis?

What kind of glue did you use?

Did you have to cut & splice wires?

Any problems?

Thanks,
Hugo

This depends on which chassis you are cutting. Reg Zip or SE and whether you intend to use the charging contacts on the chassis.

I prefer to use superglue combined with sheet styrene to fill the gap.

Again, this would depend on how far you want to stretch the thing. Everything should be OK except you may have to lengthen the steering wires.

None to speak of. It's pretty straight forward. Slice her in two. Spread her apart. Glue a section in the center. Fill, sand, and paint black.
Whatya makin by the way?

Thanks for the information Azimov,

I'm not making anything at the moment but I'm thinking about a truck or bus body that may need a longer wheelbase. Half inch +/- ?

I would like to retain the charging contacts so I'm guessing I should cut an SE chassis just in front of the on / off switch ?????

Any idea how far can you stretch an SE before you have to cut & splice wires?

Any pictures / tutorials on the Net?

Thanks again,
Hugo

Here's one of the best stretch jobs I've seen to date. Much longer than what you have in mind, and not a tutorial per say, but the same dealeo.

You should be OK with the half inch you mention.

Thanks for the link Azimov,

Taking a closer look at the SE chassis it appears that I should cut the chassis off at an angle through the rear axle slot and move the whole motor assembly and make a new mount for the axle.

Does that make sense?

I would like to retain the charging contacts.

Thanks again,
Hugo

I'd cut it here. Right between the steering pot and the battery. You can keep the charging contacts this way. But, if you stretch the thing at all, you won't get it on a standard charging station anyway as the front of the chassis will no longer clip into the front hook.
If you keep the butt of the thing intact and break off the front hook from the charging station on the TX, you should be able to hold the front end down as it charges. Or, you could make a custom charging station that has the front hook further out.

Makes sense. I'll try it.

Thanks,
