Update 9/23/2003
On a 2.2 + boost, stock MS Pro chassis + green axle and smooth tile with moderate dust. Accelerate to top speed and hit the turn button and continue to hold. After a circle or two, R/C will kinda slide towards the direction it's turning that has the appearence of drifting.

when i drift this is my setup:
front tires: bit racer hard
back tires: bit racer soft (medium on TheFanMan's track)
softest stablizer bar
blue acceleration gearing
bensu 3.0 (my dirty TOMY 3.0 went and died )

when using hard tires, use slightly softer tires in the back, but hard enough to drift with. Also, if you simultaneously accelerate and turn from a standstill or a near standstill, the car is much more likely to spin, especially with hard tires on smooth surfaces.
wee...i sit on my hardwood floor and figure these things out for hours at a time

is it hard to get your rear end out if you have softer tires in the rear?

nope! when you use blue acceleration gears with a fast, powerful motor (bensu clone motors are my fav) the back end slides out nicely, especially on hardwood floors or tabletops. The reason i don't want it to slide too much, is because you just end up doing donuts, and that is annoying.

so would you use blue gears for more accel or teal for more speed?
I prefer more speed going into the corner. easier for me to get the tail out

yeah...for slipperier tracks i bet the teals would be better for coming out of the drift b/c it would have less spinning power to being "donut-ing"
but on rougher stuff unfinished plywood and cement, the orange or blue gears work well... little more drift without having to worry about donuts as much.
also, dust screws this all up...i wipe the floor down sometimes.

i use the blue gears with a 3.0 motor and have soft bit racer tires in the front and stock tires at the back (no changes to the stab. bar).
i can't get my car to drift at all....
i think these cars a lil too small/ sensitive to do great drifts..i could be wrong..
with my setup i get great turns without flipping or spinning out...(as long as i keep my back tires clean)
note: i do not consider donuts or spin out as drifts...

My set-up:
2.6
9.86:1, sometimes 8.25:1
hard tires front
medium tires rear
silver bB (body lowered in the front) or takumi's 86
medium stabilizer bar
drifts around the kitchen chair legs great.

they are very hard to drift. i don't consider donuts drifting either. when i say drifting i mean making a turn and the rear end of the car is slipping through out the whole turn. these cars are very hard to drift cuz the steering are not proportional. but they are driftable. i've seen a japanese clip where the car drifted a lil bit. (no pun intended)
